Overclock of q9450 XPS 730

Hey guys, let me just thank you for your patience before i even begin :)

After doing some research on the dell boards as well has Hard[ocp] i tried to OC my q9450.

Here where my steps:

1. Disabled C1E

2. Speedstep was factory disabled

3. Unlinked CPU/memory

4. Set FSB speed to 400MHz

5. Muliplier is locked on a q9450 @ 8 so you can't change it (as i knew going in).

I didn't change any voltages at this point.

I saved my changes and rebooted.  32-bit vista loaded fine and i checked cpu-z and still said 2.6GHz.

Went back to the bios and my changes whree still there, but the "actual" settings still reflected the 2.6GHz.

Am i missing something?  At that point i defaulted the config, as I had to go to work.

I can't overclock my Q9450 either on the 630. No idea why.

What did you set the CPU voltage to? Also, what kind and how much RAM do you have?

Well don't quote me I'm at work at the moment...but i just barley rasied it from like 1.2 to 1.25 or something similiar (i can't recall with out looking at it exactly).

I have 4GB of RAM at 1067 MHz.

I orderred the RAM with the machine via dell, so i don't know the manufacturer, although cpu-z will tell me...I can check when i get home.

After i get the cpu to where i want it, i'm goning to start looking at OC'n my memory.

Yes, thats who made it, Samsung....I couldn't remember what cpu-z said, but now that you said it, mine was the same thing.

I had to adjust the cpu voltage.  I thought that it was such a slight overclock that i could leave it at default.  Once i bumped it up i was able to get it to OC to 2.8.  I now have it at 3.0Ghz, and this weekend i will try to get it up to 3.2 or 3.4.

I also have 4 gigs of DDR3 at 1067mhz in my XPS730 supplied by Dell. CPU-Z says it's made by Samsung

I believe mine is unknown, I don't recall CPU-z identifying it.

Is yours the RAM that Dell advertises as 800mhz, or the more expensive stuff?

All,

The Yorkfield Q9300, Q9450, QX9650 are locked processors which means the CPU multiplier is locked. You can only overclock the system by adjusting the FSB.

Chris,

just to set the record straight:

The Q9300, Q9450, Q9550, Q9650 are multiplier locked CPUs (i.e. can only be overclocked by changing the FSB).

The QX9650 is an extreme edition yorkfield and is multiplier unlocked! (i.e. could be overclocked by either changing the FSB and/or changing its multiplier).

Now, whether Dell will support unlock of this extreme edition CPU is another can of worms :}! E.g. see XPS420/720 BIOS support for QX9650 FSB multiplier (or lack thereof) :/...

Huggy_Bear,

Where are you getting this QX9650 information? If it is not from Dell, then it may not apply to our processors.

Chris,

you're kidding right?

Here are some sources w.r.t. QX9650 overclock:

1) Intel specs at: ftp://download.intel.com/design/processor/datashts/31872602.pdf (see page 29 for the Core Freq to FSB multiplier supported configs)

2) QX9650 review on Anandtech: http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/intel/showdoc.aspx?i=3184

3) thousands of reports from people overclocking their QX9650 using the FSB multiplier: google "QX9650 overclock"

4) Personally, I've tried my QX9650 on 3 different motherboards: G45, X48 and XPS 720. I was able to overclock this CPU using higher core to FSB multipliers on the first two. No go w/ the XPS 720.

Plz do not say it does not apply to Dell's processors when the culprit is the Dell BIOS that for some unknown reason won't allow smthing every other manufacturers can.

Why would Dell's BIOS allow FSB multiplier overclock of the QX6850 but not the QX9650 is still a mystery to me :/??
