PCI Express Card Error

Hello all, I have an OptiPlex GX280. Recently the video card had to be replaced, and it was under warranty, so I received the new video card from Dell. I now get the error when I turn on the system that states: PCI Express Card is operating in X1 mode I have been through this forum multiple times and have done the following: 1) Reseated the video card at least 6 different times. 2) Updated the BIOS from A07 to A08 (which is the latest one I could find). 3) Cleared the CMOS twice. I still get this error when I turn the computer on (cold boot) and I have no clue on what to do now. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Kelly Wilke

It appears you've got a faulty video card. Go into device manager, uninstall the card, reboot, let XP/Vista reinstall and find generic driver. Go to video card maker website and download latest driver. Also, can you put the card in another computer to see if the problem follows?

Hello all,
Okay question about the first reply.
Since this comes error comes up before Windows starts loading (it is on a black screen and has the Press F12 to continue or F2 to go to Setup), doesn't this suggest that it couldn't be a video driver, since Windows hasn't even started loading yet?
Do you think that the video card is marginal or bad, even though after pressing F1, Windows loads and everything works correctly?
Thanks,
Kelly

The driver part/fix is irrelevant.

If your bios says the card is running in 1x mode, I'd reseat the card, remove any other PCI/PCIe cards, reset the bios (in the bios/setup screen press Alt-F) and clear NVRAM (in the bios/setup screen light up all 3 keyboard leds and press Alt-E), then exit the bios and see if the message is gone.

If the message persists, call Dell and explain the issue as it sounds like you got a bad card or maybe the PCIe slot on the motherboard is bad.

Yes, you're right, try downloading the latest drivers for the ATI or Nivida(don't know what you have). Also if your replacement card is from a different maker you need to remove the old driver completely before install latest driver.  If same, just go to the web site and download latest driver to desktop and install for there.

Hello all,
Yes, I called Dell and they are sending me both a new video adapter and motherboard.
Thanks all and have a great New Year
