Plug & Play Configuration Error
My Dimension 8100 restarted itself after a brief power outage and then came up with the following error immediately after the title screen upon boot up:
Plug & Play Configuration Error
Plug & Play Configuration Error
Plug & Play Configuration Error
Plug & Play Configuration Error
Windows XP defaulted the video driver back to a basic, non-plug&play driver that can only support 4-bit, 640x480 resolution.
Windows XP apparently cannot recognize the video card, the audio card, the NIC and some other hardware.
I have tried resetting the NVRAM / ESCD using the Alt-E key combination with the Numlock, Capslock, and Scrolllock lights on. The system beeps as it should and then reboots after I end setup. However, I still get the same error.
I have also tried manually reinstalling the video driver (NVIDIA GeoForce2 Ultra with 64MB RAM.)
Any help is much appreciated.

The tech had me do the following:
1 - Power down computer
2 - Unplug power cord
3 - Disconnect all peripherals except for keyboard, mouse, and monitor.
4 - Restart system
Miraculously, this worked. After restarting, the video problem was gone. I had to manually reinstall the audio driver, but after the reinstallation, the audio worked fine.
I then reconnected each peripheral, one at a time. All USB devices were recognized normally. After one more reboot, everything was back to normal.
Thanks to Dell Support on this one.
