Possible memory config for XPS 8300
I have an i7 XPS 8300 with 4x2gb RAM. I'd like to pull out two simms and replace them with a single 8gb RAM for a total of 12gb. Will that work, or do I have to install memory only in pairs?
While I'm asking, what is the max memory this computer can handle?
Thanks,
EdB

Hello EjbSF,
Maximum memory supported by Dell XPS 8300 is 16GB. How much memory your Windows OS will recognize depends on which version of Windows you are running. 32-bit versions of Windows will see (and utilize) only 3GB or 3.5GB. To utilize more memory, install a 64-bit version of your OS. More information about OS memory maximums can be found here.

It is always recommended to install the memory in pairs. The follow table would describe the combination in which the memory sticks should be installed:

Thanks for the reply. I should've included the OS: Windows 7 SP1 64bit, XPS 8300 i7.
Based on the chart then, I can't install one 8gb + two 2gb. What about two 8gb? Are those recommendations or absolutes?
Thanks,
Ed

Hello Ed,
The chart shows the recommended combination of the memory sticks. If you want 16GB memory, it is advised to go with 4x4GB sticks. In case you want 12GB, 2X4GB + 2x2GB is recommended.

For best results, you should be using matched memory. I'd suggest watching for (Newegg?) sales, and getting a matched 2 x 8gb kit, which can be had for $110.
