Posting to incorrect forum.

This forum (general hardware) is becoming cluttered with postings that belong in the software or other non-hardware related forums. Is it possible for a Dell Moderator to make a posting or some other kind of announcement about this? I know it should be obvious, but some folks aren't getting it.

People seem to do this all over the fourm.  Check the MS Office section, there are many non office related posts.  Dell had to change the title of the forum at one point to help eliminate a lot of posts.

It looks like a lot of people just don't read and just post on whatever forum is handy.

When I see one that is misposted, I usually make some "non offensive" remark about "your question would get a faster response if it was posted on the "nnn" section of the  forum".  Which is true as some people that have expertise in certain areas only look at those sections of the forum.

Hi

Back before this website was in this format there was a forum called "Other-Don't Know"

This was a general meeting place, sort of a Water Cooler where people could post a request for

knowledge about their computer .  We were totally ignorant about "puters and how to navagate around this website...and this forum was a wonderful place to start & post our questions .More and more people are getting computers now and starting from scratch on the internet .

The people that regularly help others are wonderful about sharing their knowledge and this "clutter" are

subjects that are important to the people that post them.

When the "Other-Don't Know" was removed we did not know where to go for our questions..

Denny Denam, Goonboy ,-Volcano and too many to name now posted here and this is where we set our questions.

Please don't be offended by folks posting misc. questions here,  this is needed..

Can you recall the first time you turned your computer on and got an error message?  ..folks just need a

general place to post.. when they learn to search they will find the other forums..

By the way I have learned so much by reading this "clutter" since people have actually asked about things I have wondered about.

So PLEASE be patient, People just want to learn & this became the place..Our New "other-don't know".

It may seem appropriate to you.  However, there was one post recently in the CD/DVD section about how to reinstall Windows XP.  Obviously has nothing to do with CD/DVD issues (other than the CD drive is used to install the software).  Dell, and most forums, have went to great lengths to try and categorize as much as possible issues so they can be posted on the most appropriate section.  The even have separate sections for the different product lines (and I've seen the Dell moderators tell them to post on the appropriate hardware type forum section).  I realize not everything is cut and dried but many just post in whatever forum section is convenient, and don't even concern themselves with which section they are posting.  Personally I wouldn't consider the "General Hardware" section a catch all for questions.

One forum I visit (not a computer forum) they have an option that the moderators can move items from one forum section to another, if it's posted in the wrong place.  That's something Dell should consider for thier forum.

I had suggested in the past that we point that out AND not answer the question.  However, it gets answered anyway so no change in behavior takes place.

I've also tried to nicely point out that the Advanced Forum Search would have come up with the answer quite easily (when it's one of "those" questions), and then provide a short answer.  Rarely does the questioner say "Hey, thanks for giving me that tip for the future".

Pointing out better forums and pointing out multiple forum posting issues goes on and on and on...

You know, I had a feeling, when I made this posting, that someone was going to take a poke at me. I don't see the the mis-posting that KO cape refers to. But someone had to take the first jab, and I'll give KO that. But anyone that wants to look and has way too much time on their hands, is welcome to go a'huntin' fer nuttin'.

The problem with this forum is that the moderators can't move threads to the correct forum, like many other forum software can. If that feature is implemented, at least posts will be in correct places and we would have busy moderators instead of the ones that say .... "other things"

Hello-Nice to see the "regulars" laying down the law to hapless beginners. Some of these people may be using this forum for the first time and they don't have a clue, either with the forum OR their Dell computer. What I've noticed are first posters who post to the incorrect  forums, and are reprimanded, do not repost and bail the forum. That's rolling out the welcome mat to your fellow Dell computer users. What harm is there in offering some poor fool a few words of advice and telling him/her "it that doesn't do it, you should try the "xxxxxxx" forum"?

Ron B, the members that try to help posters have different areas of expertise. When they go into a forum to help folks they might not be able to help with a problem that is posted in a forum where they expect to be able to help.Members trying to assist are like most people, they don't have all day to separate the postings that they can help with. No one is laying down the law. Members are just trying to help other members by sending them to the right place for solutions. Self help and common sense are good things to develop, when working with computers, and posting to the correct forum along with not being overly sensitive are good ways to develop self help and common sense.
