Power button malfunction

I have a dell inspiron i620-228NBK desktop, bought just a little over 1 year and 1 month ago from Best Buy.

A week or 2 ago the power button became less responsive, but I could still turn the computer on by persistant pushing and wiggleing of the button.

A co-worker told me this was a 'common problem' with dells.  He showed me how the outer button pushes on a plastic rod which touches an inner button, but offered no solution other than removing the outer button and using a pencil to get to the inner button.

I have had the front panel off of my cpu and could see no signs of wear or mis-alignment; nevertheless, the last time I shut down my computer it took 2 days and 50 to 75 pushes of the button until I got lucky and the computer started up.

I will leave the computer turned on from now on, but I realize this will only help me until the next prolonged power outage.

My warranty is gone, and I am looking for a solution which does not cost nearly half of what I paid for the computer in the first place, or mean trusting the contents of my hard drive to a stranger.  Does anyone have any ideas or advice?

Thanks,   Jim

What color is power button when it won't start? And is it solid or blinking? Review page 17, here for details about Inspiron 620 .

Could be a power supply issue rather than a button problem...

You could try the paper clip method but I think that the board may be bad.  People tend to Kung foo punch the button and break it.  However pressing and holding for 1 to 2 seconds may revive it OR the power supply is going or is now totally bad.  Only real way to find this out is to Get a new power supply.  I suggest ANTEC High Current Gamer 620.

Ron, thanks for working with me on this.  The button is dark (no light at all) when I have the problem I described before.  When the computer is on it has no other problems; the light in the power button is solid white or solid amber (when in sleep) and I have never seen it blinking as it said on p. 17.  Thanks again, Jim

hi Jim,

in addition you might also want to try releasing the flea power which works most of the times on Desktop computers

steps:

1. unplug the computer from wall socket.

2.press and hold the power button for about 10 to 20 seconds.

3. connect the computer again to power outlet at the wall socket.

4. try power on the computer.

if the above doesnt work

please try different power socket also swap and check the power cables and connections.

Thanks & Regards
