Power issue - XPS 9100
I have an XPS 9100. When I turn it on, the fan revs up for about 30 seconds, then the whole system shuts down. Is it a PSU issue? If so, is it easy to replace the unit? Computer is 4 years old, so I don't want to spend a ton of dough getting it repaired.

Hi Pavlak,
The Studio XPS 9100 includes a power supply with the built in self test (BIST) feature. A test button and LED are on the side of the unit where the AC plug is located. Please press the test button and check if the LED glows. If the LED glows then it’s not an issue with Power supply.
Also, I’d suggest that you follow the steps mentioned below and check for issue resolution.
Also, I would suggest you reseat a few components, like memory again, hard drive and optical drive and see if that makes a difference. In the link below punch in the system service tag or express service code and you can access the user manual for removing and reseating components.

Please let me know the findings.

I have an XPS 9100 of the same vintage. I experienced a similar situation this past week. The fan would race and the machine would just shut down, even when there was no load.
I suspected that it was overheating. I run Speccy and sure enough all four cores were over 84 degrees Celsius.
I opened the box and noted that the fan above the CPU was clogged with dust (I have not had reason to open it for over a year).
I did not remove the processor fan but slowly and carefully moved the blades of the fan so I could clear the dust with canned air. I spent a good 45 minutes and two cans of air.
The machine has been fine ever since, with temps in the mid 40s.

I'm having a similar problem. My system was turned off (but plugged in) for approximately 8 months. I recently went to turn it on and clean it for my kids to use, and the power supply was bad. I replaced the power supply, but when I try to turn it on, the power button is amber and the fans turn (all for about one second) and then everything shuts down and nothing works until I reset the power supply. When I reset the power supply, the cycle repeats. Any suggestions?
