Bump...

I'm in the same boat here.  Anyone know?

O.K.,

I've got a Precision 340 myself.... I've been doing the research, and this is what I've found so far.

The Dell documentation says that you can go either of two ways. (And a few people out there agree too)

Staying with the 400-fsb, you're limited to the 2.8Ghz processor...
And everyone's selling those things for a Fortune, "RARE" is their claim. That's P-4, 2.8Ghz, Socket 478, 400fsb, 45ns.

The other option appears to be going to 533fsb, 40ns..  (PC1066), This is supposed to allow you go exceed the 2.8 limited on the 400fsb.
From what I've been seeing on some of the sites, the 40ns is pretty easy to beat, as most I've seen is at least 32ns.

And the 3.0Ghz 533fsb processors, although not cheap, are a better buy for the money...

Be sure you've updated the BIOS, and all the firmware on the machine from Dell.

Good Luck

Sorry, I forgot to mention that PC-800-40 RAM is supposed to support the 533 fsb also.

I am trying to do the same thing. Can anybody out there positively confirm that this system can be upgraded from 400 MHz to 533 MHz FSB with appropriate CPU, chipset, memory and BIOS?

On the question of memory, PC-800 (40ns) vs. PC-1066: does it matter? Does the BIOS perhaps detect the presence of PC-800 memory and set the slower clock speed?

Thanks
Chris

An Update on my previous posts.
I've seen, but can't verify at present, that there's a cut-off date for the mother-boards.
They have to have been manufactured after a particular date.
I'm suspecting that mine is too old.

But I'll get back to you one that ASAP

I'm about to embark down the same path and was looking at the P4 3.4Ghz HT Prescott CPU as a possible upgrade.

As shipped from Dell I am running with 1.5 Gig of PC800-40 memory and an 850 chipset 533fsb motherboard (currently running the 2.4 Gig P4 Northwood) but am looking for the HT support.

Any BIOS issues? Am not running the A07 BIOS yet, but would plan to update prior to CPU install.

Any others been successful with this upgrade?

Will heat/cooling be an issue?

Thanks,

Jamie.
