Precision 530 and firewire camcoder: Question about Firewire and Video shared IRQ

I have a firewire camera I want to test, no other firewire devices. I was unable to make the connection work, it just don't be detected by Windows XP.

Looking around I found some information regarding the connection. First, disabling video acceleration makes my computer freeze every time I turned camera on, unfreezing after turning it off. strange, right?

I found that the Radeon video card is sharing IRQ with the firewire card. But if I try to change any of them, the other reflects the new IRQ. I mean: If I set video to IRQ 9, IEEE1394 is set inmediatly to the same interrupt in the setup.

Is there a way to "untie" this irq? I'd tried disabling the firewire card, rebooting, changing video to a new irq, rebooting, reenabling firewire and rebooting, but the irq is set to the same as the video card, again.

Does any have the same behaviour, or was unable to make a camcorder work under this conditions?

Hi there, I am having the same problem with the Dell 530, It freezes the whole computer if I use the front Firewire port, but if I use the Rear ones, it works fine.  I noticed this when using my DV cam to connect, its a bloody hassle getting to the  back of the computer cause of my setup and would like to resolve the issue, how about it Dell??

When I turn the cam on, or any firewire device for that matter in the front port, the computer freezes completely and then when it is unplugged or turned off, it works fine again.

Go figure!

thanks. Glenn

Well, To be short: Drop your cable and buy a new one.

a) I've bought a cheap belkin cable for my JVC camera, but no way - freezes
b) I've bougt a cheap firewire card for my home PC, but same problem
c) I've bought another -more expensive- 1394 cable, and Wow! Worked at the office and at home!

I wish this can help you.
