Precision 690 graphic card upgrade

Hello. I own an old Precision 690 workstation with ATI X1900 (512MB) card.

Instead of buying a new workstation I decided to look into upgrading my graphic card just for another year or two.

while looking at the specs for my workstation I see that....

Support for PCI Express x16 graphics cards up to 150 watts and with up to 512MB graphics memory including: NVIDIA Quadro® FX 4500; NVIDIA
Quadro® FX 3500; ATI FireGL 7200; NVIDIA Quadro® FX 3450; NVIDIA Quadro® FX550; ATI™ FireGL™ V3400; NVIDIA Quadro® NVS 285;

this seemed odd.. I understand the need for limiting the power consumption of card but, what is the deal with the memory limit to 512MB?

I want to get the nvidia fx 5800(4GB) , nvidia fx 4800(1.5GB),  or the nvidia fx 3800(1GB).

these cards used to cost as much as the main computer back in old days but its much cheaper these days.

Please let me know if any of my upgrade solution will work on my computer.

Thank you guys

Hi inganmarcelo,

You can upgrade to NVidia FX 5800(4GB), NVidia FX 4800(1.5GB) or the NVidia FX 3800(1GB) as this cards are PCI Express 2.0 compliant.

You will have to check if there is additional power supply cable for the video card from the PSU which you would need for most of the High end video cards.

Please reply for any queries.

2gig and 3gig cards tend to use 300W or more with 2 pci-e aux power connections.

Last days i was watching for different cards, and i found one that i think that can fit, but i would like to know if im right, before i buy it, do anyone know something about the compatibility of my old 690 precision and an nvidia gtx550Ti graphic card (4gb, DDR5, PCI-e 2 16x)?

also i would like to know more about the thing with those connections you mentioned. i think i saw1 of them in my computer... how many does the 690 have?

lots of thanks.

Any reason it's not working with a Geforce GTX750 ?  I have the bios to A8 and powering the card with the 6pins from PSU...

I get an error code (2 bip) and no output.

Hi Ravi,

I have the same problem as inganmarcelo but I don't understand your answear.

You sait that the upgrade is possible as there cards are PCI-e 2.0 compliant. But when I read the documentation of the Dell precision 690 I only see  "One PCI-e x16 graphics slot" and not PCI-e 2.0 slot.

I want to buy and old NVidia FX 3800 who actually had PCI-e 2.0 but I want to know if this gpu will work on the Dell precision 690.

Can you explain me this situation to be aware about it and reply me asap.

Thanks a lot and have a good day !

Hi David,

PCI-e 2.0 refers to the version of PCI, whereas PCI-e x16 refers to the number of lanes that the slot has.

An x16 slot has 16 lanes, a x8 has 8 and so on. The greater number of lanes equates to a greater throughput of data.

To summarise, the card fits in a x16 slot and operates using version 2.0 of the PCI standard.

To answer your question about the NVidia FX 3800, yes, it should be compatible with the 690 but we can't guarantee it since it was never validated for that system.

I hope this helps
