Problem with Dell L800r and 'Antec' case
I have recently done a massive overhaul on my computer - i changed almost 95% of what used to be a dell dimension L800r series comp. Specs :
Dell motherboard w/ 800mhz (intel) processor
2 x 256MB sdram pc133 ram blocks
ATI RADEON 7000 pci bus (no agp support -_-)
CREATIVE AUDIO PCI512 sound card
LINKSYS 10/100 nic card
MAXTOR 40 gig 7200 hdd, along with stock 20 gig 5200 hdd (as slave)
PHILLIPS CDR/RW cdrom drive, along with stock cdrom
ANTEC PERFORMANCE SERIES 840 case w/power supply (big problems!!!)
5 60mm case fans, 1 mini fan (30mm- not sure) for the ATI (pci bus) 64MB graphix card
SPEEDSTREAM DSL MODEM taken apart and fitted into the 3rd cdrom drive bay for extra cooling (helps for those big file transfers)
What i am having problems with is getting the dell motherboard to acknowlege the fact that i put a new power supply to it - because the stock dell power supply just isnt cutting it with all the case fans and the fans ive added to the harddrives and graphix card. I couldnt ask for a smoother operation when i switched all the L800r components to the antec case untill i went to plug it in - the motherboard light didnt come on -_- . I double checked all the plugs, wires, connections and whatnot and everything seemed in order but i just couldnt get power to my machine untill i put the stock power supply back in (p.i.t.a. !!!) Now i have all sorts of adapter cords inside my case to run all the drives and fans - totally overflowing this stock power supply. The antec power says that its 'reverse' compatable - meaning that its P4/P3 ready. Does dell computers have a special bios code that wont allow after market power to be run??? Is there anyway i can make this motherboard accept this 300 watt powersupply??? if so lemme know plz ^_^

Hi, Mind_caddy.
You cannot connect a Dell system board to a standard ATX power supply, because Dell's power supply and board are proprietary, see this article.
http://www.upgradingandrepairingpcs.com/articles/upgrade3_01_01.asp
If you wish to use an ATX power unit, then the system board will also have to be replaced and all the usable parts transfered on to it.

hey Dell - how many motherboards/power supplys have your customers had to replace because you did not inform customers of this "key" valuable tidbit of information ???? its a good thing i know a little of electronics and components that when i failed to see the motherboard light come on i tore the plug from the wall !
and yes i too compared the plugs and wires before i ever hooked anything up but i figured that some companies use different coding of wire colors ( i used to make wire for a living insulating the copper so i know a lil bout color coding ) and again i am the stubborn type of person that if a company wont give me what i want ill take matters into my own hands - pulling prongs and splicing wires isnt a big deal to me - its the fact that they failed to tell me this BEFORE i spent $100 on a Case and power supply - its a good thing antec made thier cases universal in the bolting patterns!!!! and bestbuy went through the trouble of swapping the power supply's for me
what i want to know is why can i not find any real hardware on dells site ? - sure they got monitors, speakers, cdrom, memory, graphix cards, and whatnot but when it comes to stuff like cases, power supplies, and motherboards - you hafta goto an actual computer supply store to get them?
whats the deal Dell?? ive always told everyone i know that Dell computers are the bomb ! get a dell i say - hp, compaq, gateway(all create a low preasure region around thier eating hole) - get a dell they rock - but now after almost burning my computer and quite possibly myself - im contemplating wether or not having all the software that came with it is worth being trapped with 2 unupgradable key components.
its sucha pain to swap harddrives from one computer to another one just for programs

I wanted to upgrade a Compaq Presario and ran into problems. The motherboard wouldn't fit in a stock case and the power supply motherboard connectors were also proprietary.
I hear the "cow" PC's are all "stock" components, not proprietary.
