Processor compatibility issue

Hi,

I have a Dell XPS 600 Desktop PC. It has:

  • Foxconn LS-36 Motherboard
  • Intel Pentium D 930 Processor

I've done some research and found out that the processor uses a PLGA 775 slot but the processor I want uses a LGA 775 slot so are these two compatible?

I have been on the Intel website and found a comparison page between the two products.

Any help on this subject would be much appreciated.

You for sure cannot use any cpu other than the Pentiun D versions (or less). This MB will not accept anything other than a 800FSB processor.

If I'm not mistaken the XPS 600 can not use any "Core" processors. It pre-dates these and only supports up to the Pentium D 900-series.

The socket may be the same, but that's not the only requirement to support a processor; the chipset and bios need to accept the processor as well.

In addition, Dell tends to use "custom" implementations and there can be limitations.  For example, my Dimension E510 (identical to a Dimension 5150) uses the Intel 945G Express chipset and according to Intel up to a D960 CPU can be used, however, with the Dell's the maximum is a D945.  If a D960 is installed it will not boot.

Both the XPS 600 case and motherboard have proprietary features, it would not be easy to find a motherboard to fit the case, plus having to rewire Dell's undocumented wiring to the front panel.

When a non-Dell motherboard is installed you would need to buy a new retail, or OEM copy of windows, as Dell's OEM copies are tied to their BIOS and will not activate.

Bev.
