Program to clean duplicated files and temp files

I have downloaded several desktop theme files.  I see them unzipped in several places.  Evidently they have been duplicated.  Is there a program that will delete duplicated and no longer needed files that is easy to use for a novice?

Thanks.

Thanks so much Denny for always jumping in and helping me out!  I appreciate you.  I will check out your link.  By the way, XP seems to be running great for me.  I really like it.

Melynda,

There are a lot of them. Check the list here. I haven't used any of them, so I can evaluate their ease of use.

Melynda,

I recommend Regcleaner for ease of use and for safety's sake. I have been using its  automatic do all cleaner for over a year with no problems. I recently downloaded the newer version. I find myself still using the older version just because it is safe and easy.

The second, jv 16 Power Tools is far more powerful but far more potentially dangerous because it has many advanced features, more thorough and assumes the user knows what he/she is doing. You may prefer the second version if you are familiar with which files to delete and which not.

RegCleaner removes entries from your registry and will remove items from the Add/Remove list that have already been removed. It will not remove duplicate programs from your hard disk.

Melynda,

NO WONDER! why I haven't had any trouble with my registry in the past year!! ha

Safe program, late night for me. Denny is right. Regcleaner does not have a duplicate file tool remover the newer version I listed does. Besides the automatic do all registry cleaner, what I like most is when I install software it shows up under the Regcleaner's Software tab right away and listed as new with many details. It lists ALL software installed vrs. just some that are added to Windows Add/Remove list. Keeps me fully informed about what surprising "all" is being added when software programs are installed and can be seen therefore removed.

I also have had great success in removing items in Windows Add/Remove that remained or would not budge from the Windows list after uninstall attempts and easily removed with Regcleaner under it's Uninstall Tab. Also after uninstalling some software I notice it is still listed in Regcleaner and am able to remove the remains from there.

**I usually take notice when I see "this file already exists do you want to continue..." pop ups. My guess is that is one way how unwanted duplicates is made? Just a guess. I also strive to only unzip in one location to keep organized. Usually programs like WinZip will continue to put it in the same unzipped folder unless you specify differently when unzipping then installing.

After trying various registry cleaning programs such as Norton System Works cleaner, System Mechanic in the past I often wound up with an unstable, miserable if maybe still operating OS. So whatever you do be careful.  A little excess around the registry sides and middle never hurt anyone. ;-)

** If I were you, I would try using the Windows Search to locate duplicate files in different folders and other files that you have in question. Take note where they are located and decide from there whether to delete, keep, move or uninstall depending on your findings. I have also used  *.tmp* for locating temp files in Windows Search.  I do not delete temps by hand less then 5 days old. Some people go by a different rule of thumb.

I now use mainly a program called Spybot to handle my temp. internet files, cookies and locates spyware all at the same time. Another excellent freeware program.  ghb
