Question about Dell Precision Workstations

About 3 years ago I got a really great deal on a Dell Precision 490 WS that I couldn't pass up.  It's the fastest desktop computer I've ever had.  It really screams even with Vista running on it.

I know that these Dell Precision systems aren't designed for playing games, but recently I got interested in playing some games again.  I've been playing Call of Duty 2 and it runs fairly well.  It originally came with an Nvidia Quadro 3450 video card in it but I upgraded to a newer card that's in the signature that was better for playing games.

I was just wondering what is the main thing that holds these computers back as far as speed needed for playing games?  Is it mainly that it uses ECC RAM.  I've heard that this can slow memory down about 10-15%.  I know that the Nvidia Quadro isn't a gaming video card so I know that this was one of the things that was holding me back.  I've noticed that every once in a while it can stutter some when a lot is going on in a game.  Could this be the fact that it's using ECC Memory?

ECC Ram is not the issue.

The GPU Is an issue.

A Radeon 6670 and 8 Gigs or more Ram with 64 bit version of windows would be recommended

My problem doesn't seem to be graphics related.  I'm ok with the video card i'm running.  I'm not trying to run COD2 on high settings.  I'm getting good frame rates.  I never drop below 40fps when i'm playing.  My problem seems to occur when there are a lot of sounds going on.  It seems to stutter a little when you have gernades & bombs going off & sound is on high quality.  I'm running a Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic and I was wondering if this is not a good sound card to be using when trying to play games.

I should have done some more research on these systems.  I didn't realize that they perform optimally with 4 FB DIMMS over 2 FB DIMMS to enable the quad channel capability.  It shipped with just 2 2GB DIMMS.  It runs really smooth with the 4 2GB FB DIMMS in it now.  Doesn't really hesitate any more even if you try to play a game on it.

Hey, GameFreak,

I See that you are running a Sapphire ATI HD6870 1GB Video Card in your 490 Workstation. Did you need to make any modifications to get this to run properly? (A new power supply or anything?). I am getting a 490 Workstation for pretty cheap from a friend and want to turn it into a "light" gaming comp and am looking to get this video card...

Thanks!

So what was done to make this computer "gamable"? I am in same boat and would like to know what I need to do/buy to play games on this properly. I try Homefront and it lets me play multiplayer fine but freezes on single player during the opening video.
