RAM and HDD renewed, infinite loop occuring when installing XP

I am upgrading my grandpop's comp (optiplex GX1 500, bios A07). I have then put a new HD (80 gg) and some more RAM (128 originally, 2 x 256 generic modules added, 670 recognised in the BIOS) and tried to install XP on the new drive. It runs incredibly slowly (many hours for the first step), and finally stops running during the second step of installation. After restarting installation it says something like "infinite loop", "check video harware or drivers".
I am looking for a solution, knowing that even the old HD with win 98 does not start anymore neither (stucks on starting page) !!!!
Can it come from the BIOS (my version is supposed to fit XP), is it potentially damaged or else ???
Is there any adapted diagnostic tool ?
Are'nt drivers included in XP setup ?

TA !!

Firstly, make sure the new drive is jumpered for cable select and not master or slave.  Reset the NVRAM to redetect the changed hardware.  Make sure the hard drive is reported OK as the correct device in the bios (note - it will display 65535 Mbytes for the size - but this is cosmetic only).  Check that the processor speed is set to "normal" and not "compatible" in the bios.  Check also that the bios is reporting the correct memory size of 640 Mbytes and that the memory is Ok for the GX1 - this machine can be finicky with generic memory.....
