Crucial memory only lists 4GB as max too. Crucial List
That doesn't surprise me as Dell uses proprietary motherboards on many systems and may not fully implement the Intel chipset capabilities. I have a Dimension E510 and according to Intel, the chipset used will support up to a D960 dual CPU processor but the Dell implementation only supports up to a D945 CPU. If a D960 is installed the PC won't boot.
where people have confirmed XPS 410 actually recognizes 8G of RAM. I wonder if it is also the case for dimension 9200 as they are considered as the same model.
It's funny I was just looking into this myself yesterday and it turns out that this thread was started at the same time. I too have a Dimension 9200 and am wondering if this model, like the XPS 410, can in fact handle 8GB. syb, if you go through with the upgrade can you let me know if it works out? keithg2, how positive are you that since it works in an XPS 410 that it definitely will be the same case for the 9200?
Curteye, remember to buy 1.8v RAM. I read elsewhere the 965 motherboard won't take 2.1v RAM. I am looking for a PC6400 4x 2G set of timing 5-5-5-15 or better.
Hi, what about front side bus limitation on the RAM speed? Isn't the max speed 533MHZ - 1066 double rate? So that makes pc4200 the maximum utilized ram. Is there a point to get PC6400 ram? Thanks. Geo
The Dimension 9200 documentation says maximum ram is 4GB dual-channel 533-, 667-, and 800-MHz DDR2. However, it also says the chipset is "Intel P965 Express Chipset"
When you look up the Intel P965 Express Chipset Documentation it says 8GB 1066MHz Ram is the maximum.
One user confirmed that the 9200 does accept 8GB of RAM.
I know this is an ancient post, but I wanted to CONFIRM that the DIMENSION 9200 / XPS 410 DOES ACCEPT 8GB OF RAM! I just bought 8gb of Corsair XMS2. I had to buy 2 of these kits as each kit contains 4gb of ram (2 chips of 2gb each). It works like a charm. I am running WIN7 64-bit. I am also running a new Nvidia Quadro 4000 video card, and upgraded my power supply to the Corsair HX650w. The machine is running like a champ.
I also tested running with 5GB or RAM. I bought one 2GB stick of ram. I already had 3 - 1GB sticks in my system. The system recognized all 5GB of RAM just fine. So it appears Dell's documentation is incorrect. Based on what Intel's Documentation said, I would say you should be able to get 8GB in your system with no problem.
Here is the 2GB stick I bought. Cheapest one I could find.
It's not so much that Dell's documentation is incorrect, as it is outdated. They do not update their original docs when changes are made. The best indicator is to check chipset support, then check BIOS update release notes. OEM BIOS' do not always (in fact, seldom) allow ALL features of a given chipset to be accessible/used. This is sometimes a marketing decision, but is usually a compatibility/stability decision.
the docs were wrote when there was only 32 bit Os. With the release of 64 bit OS's the amount of ram that can be used also increased. A 32 bit Os can only us 4 gigs while a 64 bit can use significant amount more.

Thank you for your input fireberd. However, I found this thread

where people have confirmed XPS 410 actually recognizes 8G of RAM. I wonder if it is also the case for dimension 9200 as they are considered as the same model.

Hi syb,
Your 9200/XPS 410 supports a maximum of 8GB of RAM. I'm currently running with 6GB in my XPS 410.
Below are the compatible 2x2GB kits I've used. You can use 533MHz, 667MHz or 800MHz.
Crucial 2x2GB kit - CT2CP25664AA800 DDR2 PC2-6400 800MHz
Kingston 2x2GB kit - KVR800D2K2 DDR2 PC2-6400 800MHz

Hi curteye,
To my knowledge, both the XPS 410 and 9200 are the same systems with the same motherboard. You'll be fine.

XP 64-bit became available in 2005, but few used it.

Thanks for this thread, for I have just come across the same problem, but now all is clear. I will now confidently upgrade to 8gb and my OS.
