RT7D20 Keyboard on PS/2 to USB Adapter

We use a RT7D20 keyboard (PS/2) which we want to connect to an USB port using an PS/2 to USB adapter (passive adapter, only cable and connectors). The used OS is Windows XP. Our problem is that XP can't locate the keyboard on the USB port. Is this keyboard capable to be driven on an USB port using such an adapter, or do we have to use an active adapter, which performs the adaptation from PS/2 to USB?

Sven Jungnickel,

I hope you can understand that Dell can only support or recommend changes that we have tested and certified. We're not going to be much assistance here.

I'll keep this message posted here and hopefully somebody will have information to pass along.

Hello. I don't know if you've resolved this problem or not, but I have a possible solu-- actually, more of an explanation for you. It turns out many companies (on eBay and online merchants) are selling supposed PS/2 to USB adapters for fairly cheap ($3-4). You might've thought to yourself, "Wow, what a deal, these are usually $14-20!" However what these frauds don't tell you is that those fairly cheap adapters only work for mice, and therefore are pretty much useless (most all mice are USB these days, and come with a worthless USB to PS/2 adapter).

So for you, or anyone else out there that are having problems with a PS/2 to USB adapter, make sure it was meant for keyboards (if not both mice & keyboards). That will most likely solve the headaches you might have been getting. As for those merchants who are falsely advertising this product, shame on you. If you need a cheap place to get a REAL PS/2 to USB adapter, I suggest looking on eBay. The REAL ones usually have 2 outlets for a keyboard & mouse, instead of one like those fake ones for mice.

Hope that helps someone out there, I don't want anyone going through the whole stressful ordeal I went through  trying to return a perfectly good keyboard because of these 'fake' adapters going around. If you have any questions, such as where to buy (if you're eBay-a-phobic), or if an adapter in question is a TRUE adapter, feel free to contact me.

I read your post because I was having the same problem (I had used one of the little six buck adapters and it didn't work).  Sooooo, I went out and searched RadioShack.com for an answer.  Found the adapter that seemed to meet the requirements the other responder discribed. . .went out and bought it (Model 26-226) for 20 bucks, and am typing away on my RT7D20 keyboard.  Has a nice touch, by the way.

Hope that helps!
