Radeon x300 driver problems

Question

Hi all, hope that somebody can help   I just tried updating my driver for my ATI Radeon x300 video card that came with my Dimension 8400 pc.  The driver I had was version 6.14.106476 which I checked in device manager.  I found an updated version on Dells website and downloaded it, following all instructions.  When I went back to device manager, I expected to see version v.8.122-050329a-023511C, but I was the old version.  Does anybody know what I am doing wrong? I downloaded the ATI 128MB PCI-Express x16 (DVI/VGA/TV-out) Radeon X300 SE driver.  There was another called ATI 128MB PCI-Express x16 (DVI/VGA/TV-out) Radeon X800 SE425c/350m 8 pipes but that means nothing to me.  Is there any real difference?   Thanks in advance

You are better off downloading the drivers from the ATI site and NOT the Dell site. They are more up-to-date and there are helpful forums there if you have issues. The Dell drivers are typically older and not as extensively tested as the Manufacturer ones. Another good site to check for updated video drivers with a nice forum for help is Guru3d.com.

Thnx to Paparandy.. the Guru3D site is very useful, since driver updates can be confusing.. The 'Version tracker' showed the following (amid a jumbled, double+triple entried list) as the latest drivers for x300 (as at 28 Nov 05):  -Radeon x300 Series... 6.14.10.6553... (5 July 05) -Radeon x300 Series Secondary... 6.14.10.6543... (28 April 05) also to confuse more: -Radeon x300 Series 128Mb Hypermemory... 6.14.10.6525... 17 May 05 -Radeon x300 Series 128Mb Hypermemory Secondary... As above. I still dont even know what card Ive got, and the Dell dudes will tell me anything to get me outa the way...
