Ram Issues Optiplex gx 755 computer

Hey Guys,  I just purchased a Optiplex gx755 3.4 ghz from a guy. He told me that he got it from Dell and it was working fine. He had a 1gb stick of ram in it. He said that he upgraded it with 3 more 1 gb sticks that he bought from Crucial Ram and now the cpu won't come on. He showed me that the indicator lights are saying that it is a ram problem.  I think that I am going to strip the ram and start all over 1 stick at a time. Have anyone heard of this issue and please give me a recommended course of action.

I am thinking of running 64 bit xp pro once I get it to working, what are your opinions?

Thanks

I don't see an Optiplex GX755 listed. Could it be an Optiplex 755?

The 755 uses DDR2 RAM which means it should be installed in matched pairs. So if the seller says it only had 1 GB of RAM, that doesn't make sense. And adding 3 GB more would mean that one pair is a mis-match. Did one of the original pair die and s/he bought 3x1 GB to replace and upgrade?

In that case, remove the mis-matched pair and put the matched pair in slots1 and 2 and see if it boots now.

Ron, it is a Optiplex 755. The ram in it is 3 sticks or Sansung 1gb 2Rx8 PC2-5300u-12-e3 ram and 1 stick og 1 gb Hynix 1Rx8 PC2-5300U-555-12. I

I put 2 of the matching Samsung rams into slot 1 and 2 and the cpu still won't boot up. The system light # 1 3 , and 4 continued to stay on. The monitor won't even come on. I know that the monitor is good It's my regular monitor. Is this even the right ram for this cpu? If the guy only upgraded the cpu it should read after downsizing it shouldn't it? Guys I'm lost help!

this is what the guys post said that I bought it from

Dell Optiplex GX755 SSF Computer

Microsoft Windows XP Pro OS!

Intel Pentium Dual Core 3.40GHz!

4GB DDR2 Memory!

256 MBytes Intel Video, Q965/Q963

80GB Hard Drive with new Windows O.S. from Dell Inc.

Only what you see is in the pictures is what is included in the sale.

I purchased this from Dell directly with the intention of upgrading it to an even faster PC.

However, the PC won't power on (POST) but instead gives 3 indicator lights that it can't read the newly added memory?

Hmmm..... 1,3,4 isn't a documented error code.

I presume that guy's "specs' are correct and it's using onboard video, and not an add-in PCI-e video card. So make sure the monitor cable is correctly connected to the rear blue video connector on the system.

Let's try this before you go too much further.

1. Power off and unplug

2. Press/hold power button on tower for ~15 sec

3. Open the case and remove the motherboard battery

4. Press/hold power button on tower for ~30 sec

5. Put matching modules in slots 1 and 2.

Note: slot 1 is closest to the processor and slot 2 is matched to slot 1 by color code, but is physically the THIRD slot from the processor.

6. Carefully remove and reinstall PCI cards, if any

7.  Reinstall the battery (right-side-up!) and see if boots with only mouse monitor and keyboard attached.

If that doesn't work, remove the 2 modules and put the one original module in slot 1. Do the "battery thing" again and see if it boots. Assuming this works, that suggests either incompatible RAM, bad RAM or a bad motherboard.

Dell PCs are extremely fussy about RAM. Even if it has the right specs, it may not work. So if it boots with the one original module, then you likely have incompatible RAM.  In that case, you might want to purchase a matched 2x1GB set (or 4x1GB, depending on your budget)  from some place that guarantees it will work or they take it back for a full refund. And then sell the other 4 modules on eBay.
