Recording with Dell XPS

Hi, just got a new Dell XPS 430 and am recording music using Sonar 7 Producer. I have a mic goin into the line-in and
speakers and all is working well, except for the fact I cannot record
only via the line-in, it records everything you can hear on each track
("bouncing each time") on a previous soundblaster this was fixed by
changing 'what u hear' to 'line in' in the Eq. I can t work out how to do
it! Please help, I want to continue using soundblaster but will have to take it back if I
can t record via line-in only. Maybe someone could recommend a soundcard that would work in this PC if there is no fix?.. Thanks for your help, Paul.

There is no "what you Hear' on new Dell's.  (And there is no what you hear on some other brands too - I installed a new HP with a Q6600 Quad CPU that is equivalent to an XPS back in Novemeber for a client (another musician) and there was no system mixer/what you hear on that one).

If you want to record and have Sonar, you are better off with some external recording device, not the PC audio.  I have Sonar 8 Producer and have a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 firewire device that I use for my home recording "studio".   There are two channel USB connected interface units that are not very expensive and they will do what you want (check www.musiciansfriend.com web site).  Shure and several other mic companies are not making USB connected mic's.  Shure has one that is equivalent to a PG58 mic.

What kind of mic do you have connected to the "line in"?  A standard P.A. mic's level is too low for a PC as the Line In and Mic both require near "line level" for proper operation.  You can us a mic to a mixer or some type of preamp that outputs line level and then to the PC inputs.

Hey, thanks for the reply.. yeah I've got a Studio Mic into a mixer then into sound card. Would I have to disable the x-fi soundcard (uninstall/physically remove sound card) to be able to record just the line-in with the firewire device? Or would simpy changing the audio settings in Sonar be sufficent? Thanks again..

I use the Line 6 UX2 as my audio interface and as an external sound card, bypassing the internal one. It works well for me. It has inputs for guitar, keyboards (line in) and vocals. I'm about to get Sonar Producer 8 too!

I have a SoundBlaster sound card installed.  When I use Sonar 8 my firewire connected Saffire Pro 40 is is set as the sound "device" in Sonar 8.  Since it is ONLY being used in Sonar 8 it does not interfere with the PC's SoundBlaster sound card.   When using the Saffire Pro 40, my audio "out" for monitoring or playback with Sonar is routed to the headphone jacks on the Saffire Pro 40.

On getting Sonar 8, if you have some type of recording software now, check the Cakewalk site before you buy as some of the other recording software qualifies for a discounted "competitive upgrade" and you can get Sonar at a reduced price.  I had Cubase 3 LE that came with an Alesis io26 Firewire recording interface (what I used before I got the Saffire Pro 40) and Cubase qualified for the competitive upgrade and I got Sonar 7 (the current version at the time) for under $200 (much less than any discounted price from places such as www.musiciansfriend.com ).
