Reducing Digital Photo's size to send via e-mail

Wasn't sure where to post this, but hoped some computer expert, hee hee, would come across this question.

I have a digital camera, DC4800 by Kodak, but its the kind where the lowest setting, puts most of the photo's in the 200+KB range size each. A big too large for some application such as e-mail.

Is there a way, to chop off the photo, resize it. To bring the file size, to lets say 30KB-50KB, (instead of the Mega 230KB on the HardDrive) I've seen some even way lower than that such as 8KB no kidding. To make it easier to send and exchange photo's via e-mail. (I'm sure some out there are familar with this prodecure step by step easily, its doable, but need to be pointed in the right direction to do so.)

Thanks to all, David,

p.s. I should have all the necessary programs to do this.

Dell Dimension 8100
1.4 Ghz, 256MB Memory, 60GB HD, other software programs ect...

I don't know if you already have all the necessary programs, but what you need is something to reduce the resolution. I use a product from Adobe called Photo Deluxe that will reduce a 1+ MB photo to something around 70 kb, which is more than manageable for e-mailing. You can buy it as a standalone product at any software supplier, and it usually comes with UMAX scanners, too. I've used versions 3.0 and 4.0 for some time now, with great success.

I'm not sure if the Picture It progs. that come with MS Works Suite will do the same thing, but that would probably be the place to look onboard, if you have that installed.

The exact process varies according to imaging program, but as the other response indicates, the trick is to reduce the resolution. Generally if you resize (or "resample" if you are give a choice) to about 640x480 pixels or fewer, then save as a JPEG at 70-80% quality (these standards vary from program to program), you'll get a file small enough to email. Of course, the fewer the pixels, the smaller the file. Some programs make this easier than others--I recently had to use ArcSoft PhotoImpression and was amazed at how difficult it was to do something this simple. If your program doesn't work very well, check out a freeware gem called IrfanView--incredible useful.
