Refresh rate problem in games.

I haven’t gamed in a few years (new baby) but now that I received my new XPS 630i I thought that I would play some of those games that I had missed. I installed Doom 3 yesterday (latest patch) and was surprised to see that I’m stuck at a refresh rate of 60Hz and I can’t find any way in the control panel of the drivers to force a higher refresh rate. As I said I’ve been away from Pc gaming for a few years, hasn’t the Window XP refresh rate problem been fixed by now? With my older PC I had a ATI Radeon 9700 Pro but I used a utility to fix the refresh rate in all games.   Is anyone else having this problem or am I only having the problem because I’m trying to play a 3-4 year old game?   Thanks for any help you may provide.   XPS 630i Intel Core2 E8400 Windows XP Pro 4GB Corsair Dominator 500GB - 7200RPM, SATA Dual Drives: 48x Combo + 16x DVD+/-RW Sony GDM-F520 CRT nVidia GeForce 8800 GT 512MB Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio edit B&W CDM1NT with Velodyne VA-1250X X-Fi XtremeMusic (to be installed)

You fail to mention what monitor you have, which is probably the most important part of determining the refresh rate.  Most of the newer large screen LCD monitors have an internal refresh rate 0f 60Hz, as does my Dell 24" LCD.  I play CoD4 and Crysis on my 630 and haven't found the refresh rate of 60Hz to be a limiting factor - the games play quite well.

Check you display properties it may be set to hide modes...what is listed in device manager for the monitor...does it say pnp monitor or list it by name..

The monitor is a few years old but I do have the lastest driver installed. Using my older computer just a few weeks ago I played a few minutes of a couple games with an ATI 9700 Pro and the refresh rates were right in the games.

I just don't know if you have to download a refresh fix somewhere for the 8800 Gt for it to go beyound 60hz in windows XP with a CRT. This was a $1600 monitor so I've been slow to give it up.

Rambler358 is correct if you don't install the monitor icm file windows will just driver it as a generic pnp monitor and only give 60hz..as will the video driver software

Have you tried installing the latest Sony display driver(s) for that monitor?

Do you have the monitor connected with a digital or analog cable?  Perhaps the 8800GT is limited with analog cables, if that's what you're using.  Perhaps posting a message in one of the Nvidia forums may yield better info.

I use a Sony GDM-F520 which at 1600X1200 should refresh @ 85hz just like it does at my desktop.

i posted the question in the Nvidia forums but haven't gotten an answer back yet. I read in Maximum PC justa couple months ago about using a Rivatuner to overclock you 8800GT card and I believe that it had a tab for fixing the refresh rate......I can't find the issue that had it.

It is listed as a Sony GDM-F520 in the device manager. I was use to playing games like UT and half-Life 2 at a fresh rate of 100Hz with this same monitor.
