You start by partitioning and formatting the hard drive, this is part of reinstalling the operating system.
First, you make the CD/ROM/DVD the first boot device.  Procedures for configuring a Dimension series system to boot to the CD/DVD drive.

<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed / replaced from this post by Dell>

After this you can use the following instructions.

http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp

To find the Dell reinstall guide, that's specific to your system, go here

Prior to installing, remember to disconnect all external peripherals from the computer, except the keyboard, monitor and mouse.
While installing, delete all existing partitions (Paragraph 5) when you are prompted, then remake and format
them (Paragraphs 6 & 7), following by installing XP.

You will have to reload the drivers and applications, etc, that should be on the CDs sent with the computer, starting with the chipset driver, then the video driver and the remaining drivers.
After the installation, you will need to download and install the MicroSoft Critical Updates, plus any other updates you deem necessary, also remember to enable the firewall and install the AV software before going online.
Printing a copy of these instructions, as a reference while installing XP could also be a help.

I am trying to re-install Windows XP after replacing a crashed hard drive in my Mom's computer.  I replaced her 40Gb Seagate that came with the computer with a 120 Gb Seagate.  I followed the directions in the posting above, but it crashed halfway through.   I get an error that says licdll.dll was not copied correctly.  If I hit the re-enter key, nothing happens.  If I hit the escape key, I get the same message regarding the explorer.exe file.  Then, browseui.dll, localspl.dll, shdocvw.dll, inetpp.dll, themeui.dll, msi.dll, ulib.dll, cmd.exe, msxml.dll, msart.dll, syssetup.dll, imapi.exe, webfldrs.msi, msimsg.dll, net1.exe, webcheck.dll, mobsync.dll, iedkcs.dll, quartz.dll, cryptui.dll, riched20.dll, loadperf.dll, then it crashes completely with the following message:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

The problem seems to be caused by the following file: ntfs.sys

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

If this is the first time youve seen this stop error screen, restart your computer.  If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.  If htis is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software.  Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.  If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press f8to select advance start-up options, and then select safe mode.

Technical information:

***Stop:0X0000050 (0XE31C819C, 0X00000001, 0XF864BC16, 0X00000002)

***ntfs.sys - address F864BC16 base at F864B000.  Datestamp 41107eea"

Does that look familiar to anyone?

Thanks,

It sounds like you have a memory problem, check out the following,

When you installed the hard drive, you did set the jumpers to cable select?
