Replacing Motherboard, processor, and RAM in inspiron 660

I have a inspiron 660, with a i5-3450 and 8gb of ram, I have already replaced the case and added a dedicated graphics card. I want to get a new motherboard because the stock one does not support socket 1150 processors, and does not support much more ram. So would replacing the motherboard, processor, and adding ram have any effect on the computer, since when I put it in a new case it got messed up somehow.

EDIT

Also I am wondering can you use the ram, processor from the stock inspiron 660 in other computers or would that not work because its OEM?

You are not going to get much benefit from an upgraded processor; it most never helps enough to justify the cost. What are you doing that you need more than 8 GB of RAM? Only apps that benefit from gobs of RAM are video editing and CAD. What got messed up when you used a new case?

It was a while ago when I swapped the case so I forget in detail what happened but the wifi, sound, and resolution was messed up and there where some other windows errors which I don't know why/how it happened. I can see the wifi problem, maybe it used the case as a antenna or I accidentally took off the antenna. I would like more ram because I normally have 100+ tabs open in chrome, while using photoshop cs6 extended and 3d editing, it really takes up your ram. I'm currently at 6gb of ram and I don't even have photoshop up, I'm just idling, with some other programs up but nothing extensive.

But for the main purpose, computers have an average life span of 4 years,  where the hardware gets outdated or things start to fail. Instead of buying a new computer I would just like to keep building upon this one, until eventually there is no dell parts left in the machine.

Bump, I would just like my original question answered, can you replace the mobo and cpu, will the ram that came with the system be compatible with a new mobo?

I'm planning on a compete replacement on the board and cpu, I have some picked out I'm just wondering if there would be any problems with the machine if I upgraded everything. Also would the Dell stock RAM work in the new board?

The 660 uses a micro-ATX board. The first thing to do is see if you can find a micro-ATX replacement board that has the features you want - CPU and RAM size.

find out what memory is in it, and then decide if it fits the the new MoBo.

Use a tool like CPU-Z from cpuid www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

and you can see what the memory is.

Keep in mind the DRAM frequency is half of the memory speed, so DDR3 1600 will report that it is running 799 Mhz +/- a little.

if it is DDR3-1600 memory, it will work in many systems, even those with a newer MoBo

The rest or your piece parts should work fine. hard drives, optical drives etc.

Or, sell your existing system and start over.

Only if the Dell RAM is compatible with the specifications of the computer/motherboard that you are installing it in.

Bev.

Ps: If a non Dell motherboard is used as a replacement, budget for a new retail/OEM copy of windows, as Dell's OEM copies are tied to their BIOS
