I am having a similar situation, and am trying to reinstall Windows 7 after replacing the hard drive in my XPS PC (using a Dell Windows 7 Ultimate media).
I had a difficult time performing the reinstall, as after completing it would throw the error "Widows setup could not configure windows to run on this computer's hardware", though I was able to get around this by pressing Shift-F10 to open a command prompt and running msoobe.exe.
I am now attempting to reinstall my Windows and driver updates using Windows Update; but consistently receive the error “Windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running” if I attempt to check for updates. I have checked my Windows Service and verified the Windows Update service is running, restarted the service and/or rebooted my PC multiple times, and I have tried a recommended fix I found to delete the SoftwareDistribution folder - all to no effect.
Any recommendations on how to fix this issue so I can get my PC updated back to currency; and any other advice on reinstalling Windows 7 on a Dell XPS PC?

Dell-Rajesh R,
Thanks very much for the quick response. I'll try out Advanced Boot Options and look into getting a new drive.

Dell-Rajesh R,
Question about drive replacement: Would I be able to substitute an SSD for my OS hard drive?

Hi ggunn,
Current SSD's are 2.5" SATA drives, and are installed just like any conventional hard drive.
Awaiting your response!
