Restting computer to factory settings

I would like to erase my entire computer and have it back to the factory settings. The computer was purchased in 2003 so does not have the pc restore. How do I do it? I have saved all the data I want to keep on an external hard drive. I have a Dimension 2400.

Since your model did not come with the PC Restore utility, your only option is to do a clean install of the operating system.  Once the operating system and drivers are re-installed you will then have to re-install your favorite software applications as well.   Click here for Denny Denham's web site and review the information he has posted on doing a clean install of the OS on a Dell computer.

As for the BIOS, you can clear the NVRAM which will cause the system to redetect all the installed hardware while at the same time default all the BIOS options back to the way they were when the system was first shipped from the factory.  To clear the NVRAM, just do this.....
  • Reboot system and enter the BIOS Setup by pressing F2.
  • Turn on Caps Lock, Scroll Lock and  Num Lock.
  • Press ALT + E then ALT + F (should hear beep) then ALT + B
