SD Card Reader

I have an XSP 9000/435t.

The SD card reader started giving me problems today.  If I insert an SD card (8gb) it asks me if I want to format the card.

The SD card works fine in my wife's computer (also a Dell) and it works fine in my camera. I tried the trick of unplugging the computer for a few minutes but that did not help.  The Device Manager shows the Realtek Card Reader is installed properly and has the newest drivers.

But what makes this different from other SD card problems I've searched on this forum, the xD card reader works just fine.  I can read, write, and format xD cards just fine but the SD card slot does not work.

Any thoughts?

Hi Cybersmith ,

Greetings from Dell.

Kindly try and swap another card on to your computer and check if it works. I would also suggest you to Re-install the card reader driver as there are possibilities that the driver could be corrupt. Kindly find the below link for the driver download page, key in the service tag and the right operating system for the selection of drivers.

I have tried a different SD card and get the same thing. I downloaded the new drivers as you suggested, but still have the same problem.  I insert a SD card and it says it needs to be formatted. But then it says that the card can't be formatted. But the xD card slot still works.

This could be an OS Issue. Try and take a data back up and perform a PC Restore.

8GB card has always worked previously.

Also, as stated earlier, an xD card works fine in the xD slot.  Only the SD card slot is not working.

Do they use separate drivers?

You do not have an 8gig XD card. :emotion-4:

Media type XD memory card

Capacity Maximum 512 MB (original)

maximum      2 GB (Type M/M+, Type H)

Developed by Olympus, Fujifilm

So your notation that the XD card works means nothing.

SD = 2GIGS FAT16

SDHC = 4 Gigs up to 32 Gigs FAT32

SDXC = 64 GIGS 128 GIGS etc EXFAT

Drivers is not the issue.  File system is.

SDHC compatable readers present the drive as FAT32.

The xD card is 128MB. The SD card is 8gig.

My point was that the xD reader works but the SD reader does not.  It worked fine up until last week.

I tried to run the firmware upgrade ftp.us.dell.com/.../R191223.exe but got the message "The memory card reader cannot be found or this firmware update is not for this system. Please confirm the system once again."

So that does not fix it.

I have tried a system restore but the problem was not resolved.
