Can you please spell out the directions in layman's terms, in great detail. Please I don't want to make even the slightest error and hurt my computer. I know it's a lot of work to ask of you but I just want to do it right and not mess anything up. Please help!!!
1. Click on the Windows "Start" Button
2. Click on "Run..."
3. Under the box "Open" type "regedit"
4. Navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\HidServ\Parameters"
5. Notice the current "Type" field of ServiceDLL
---
If ServiceDLL type is REG_EXPAND_SZ skip to step 11. Otherwise continue...
---
6. Right-click on ServiceDLL and select "Delete" from the drop-down menu. Click "Yes" you are sure you want to delete.
7. Right-click in open space below default value and select "New>Expandable String Value"
8. Name this new Expandable String Value "ServiceDLL"
7. Right-click on your newly created "ServiceDLL" and select "Modify"
8. Enter "%SystemRoot%\System32\hidserv.dll" into the field (NOTE: enter with no quotes)
9. Click "OK"
10. Close Registry Editor
11. Navigate to your computer control panel
12. If not in classic view click on "Switch to Classic View" on the left.
13. Double-click on "Administrative Tools"
14. Double-click on "Component Services"
15. Click on "Servies (local)"
16. Right-click on "Human Interface Device Access" and select "Properties"
17. Change start-up type to "Automatic" and select "OK"
18. Restart your computer
That's it! Good luck
Thanks ""bnieman"" .. Great job of spelling procedure out step by step. I did notice one typo but that was my fault. Line 4 as you and I both typed was:
4:Navigate to:
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\HidServ\Parameters"
There should not be a space in Servic es. Line 4 should read:
4. Navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\HidServ\Parameters"
An easy way to get to "Services" is to:
a. Right Click on the My Computer icon on your desktop
b. Left click on Manage (this will bring up "Computer Mangement"
c. Left click the + key beside Services and Applications
d. Left click on Services
e. Scroll down to HID Input service
-------------------------------------------
At this point, I just Right Clicked on HID Input service and then left clicked on
Start and my keyboard began working immediately. But, bnieman is correct, you should do it the way he states to make sure that it is turned on at Windows restart..
Great job bnieman..
I hope this is the fix for everyone.... Starling2k

All of the fixes so far only work if you run as an administrator (not following The Principle of Least Privilege,
http://kb.iu.edu/data/amsv.html). It is pretty silly to expect you to have to run your media player with administrator-level privileges. Dell needs to provide a solution that does not contradict this important security principle.
Thank you very much. Here are my possibly two problems. I hope you can help...
At Step 5....
I see:
Ab (Default) REG_SZ (Value Not Set)
Ab Service Dll REG_EXPAND_SZ %SystemRoot%\System32\Hidserv.DLL
****Maybe the default is the problem???****
Or...
Because when I go to Step 16. I don't have "Human Interface Device Access" but I do have HID Input Service... My HID Input Service "IS" already set to Automatic...
And it's a personal computer, there is no administrator.
If your PC is a stand alone PC and you're the only user of that PC, you should have "administrator" rights by default. Also, as you stated, you do not have "Human Access Device" but "HID Input Service; that is correct - HID Input Service is what you should see. A couple of suggestions:
1. When you look at HID Input Service, scroll over to the right of "Description" and check on the "Status". Is it showing Started? If not, then look back to the left of that screen and you will see option to Start the service. If it is showing "Started", then look to the left and stop the service and then try restarting it.
2. Also, in your message you indicate you see the following:
Ab (Default) REG_SZ (Value Not Set)
Ab Service Dll REG_EXPAND_SZ %SystemRoot%\System32\Hidserv.DLL
I'm not sure what the Ab part of these strings are??? On my system, running WindowsXP, I just have (Default) with the remainder of that line as well as just Service Dll on the second line. If you have backed up your registry, I would delete the Ab and the spaces following it on both of the lines and then try restarting your computer.
To check to see if you really do have Administrator rights,
1. Click Start, then click Control Panel, then click User Accounts and then "Change My Account Type" If you have Administrator rights, the radio button in the panel will be on "Computer Administrator", if it's on limited, then you do not have full administrator rights. If you find that you do not have administrator rights, post back to the Board and maybe we can lead you through changing your account to Administrator.
Hope this is some help - just some stabs at what might fix it for you..
Actually, I also have the same two registry entries as the user above so the solution won't work for me either. My HID services are set to automatic and are started. I just don't have the functionality of the knob on the keyboard though the other controls seem to function alright. I know I am an Administrator and I am also running WinXP-sp2
TO SET UP GOBAL HOTKEYS IN WINAMP 5:
1. Open WinAmp
2. Go to Options>Preferences
3. Under General Preferences navigate to "Global Hotkeys"
4. Click the value you wish to set.
5. Under the "Hotkey" field click the button on your Dell keyboard you wish to use (for example under "Playback: Play/Pause" hit the "Play/Pause" button on your keyboard in the HotKey field. You should then see the value change from "Ctl+Alt+xx" to "Play/Pause". If you set the Play/Pause field don't worry about the individual Play and Pause Hotkeys)
6. Click "Set"
7. Repeat for all keys you would like to set.
Once you go through this procedure, these keys will work even when WinAmp is minimized. You cannot set the volume knob in WinAmp, it should change the gobal volume control by default if your human input device service is running correctly as commented on in my previous post. Just make sure you WinAmp volume is maximized, and use the knob to control volume.
I am not sure about iTunes... I stay away from that BEAST of a program. My only suggestion for you would be to look for a Hotkey like settings box in the options.
---
I currently have all my keys working in WinAmp 5. By default they worked in Windows Media Player.
Although I posted exactly how to change your registry in a previous post, I personally did not have to edit any values to make it work. I switched from a Microsoft Internet Keyboard which added the correct items to the registry to begin with and then I switched to the Dell keyboard.
I've been trying to get this working since July. Everything works for me now that I've enabled global hotkeys. Winamp is my media player. I run as a restricted user (non-admin)
I just talked to a rep at Dell (Christina, who was very helpful) about not being able to open itunes with the audio button on the keyboard, and after about 30 min, we figured out my problem. I went into itunes and set itunes as the default player. . . duh. After a reboot I tried out the audio button and it opened itunes instead of windows media player. However, I stil can't get the player to work if it is minimized at times, or if it is in the background to something else. This may not help you, but I thought I'd chime in with anything that might ease your itune pain.
I have the iTunes minimized problem too, what I do to work around it is while iTunes is running, press the music button that starts iTunes to bring it to the front screen, than I can do the play functions that I want with the other buttons.
Dell makes a keyboard..stamp their name on it. Not ship any drivers with it...provide no solutions to users problem...no update whatsoever...what kind of company have they become. I mean you shouldn't put out a product if it aint ready.
