Scanner OneTouch 9320 USB

For Information: prior e-mail:Subject: Re: #Dimension#DHS##19# eTrack#=2418611X1YLCDB17P - Dell DJ

These are the things that I have done:

1) I have contacted Visioneer about the initial error message #1406.  They advised me to contact Dell for information about how to login as Administrator in Windows XP.  Dell gave me this information, I followed it.  I was able to install the PaperPort software without getting the subject error.  However, the computer still doesn't connect to the scanner.

2) Dell's automated customer support asked me to try using another cable.  I did this and no change was observed.

3) Dell's automated customer support advised that I follow these steps (shown following the *) to make sure that the Legacy USB support is turned ON:

* Press the DEL key when your screen starts to come on to enter the System Setup for a Dimension.  (My comments are shown in bold)  I actually needed to press the DEL key and then the F2  to enter SETUP.  A screen with the heading BIOS Version A03 came up.

* Press Ctrl-Alt-Enter for an Optiplex.

* At the Main BIOS screen press the right arrow key once.  Pressing the right arrow does nothing.
Only one screen comes up.

* At the Advanced screen, press the down arrow key 3 times. The Advanced screen does not exist.

* Peripheral Configuration becomes highlighted, press the [Enter] key.  The option for Peripheral Configuration does not exist.  The closest option to choose was "Integrated Devices (Legacy Select Options)"  I chose this by pressing Enter.  Two applicable lines in the next screen were "USB Emulation is ON" and "USB Controller is ON".  I made no changes to these options and exitted.

* At the Peripheral Configuration screen, press the down arrow screen 3 times.

* Press the [+] key once to change the USB selection to ENABLED.

* Press ESC once, then press the right or left arrow keys to highlight "Exit."

* Press [Enter] twice to save the setting and reboot.
There was no reason to save since I made no changes.  This is the end of the Dell automated instructions.

When I reboot, I see a bar graph in the lower right corner of my screen.  It initially says:"Finding Scanner".  After the bar graph has moved completely to the right the next message is:"Unable to Connect to Scanner."

By the way, the Norton Virus Protection Software has been temporarily removed so it has not been a factor in anything that has gone on. Please tell me what to do next!

The user's forum is primarily users helping users.  Since we are not Dell employees and do not have access to your referenced tracking number, you will have to post your PC Model Number, Operating system and what the problem is so one of the users can try to assist you.

In general (1) the antivirus program is not interfering in almost all cases.  DO NOT operate without the Antivirus program as you can open your PC to viruses.  (2) have you scanned your PC for spyware? if not download AdAware or SpyBot (I prefer AdAware) and do a complete spyware scan.  It sounds like you have Windows XP, do you have the SP2 installed?  (4) when you installed the scanner did you install in the proper order - FIRST install software and DO NOT connect the scanner to the PC until the installation program tells you to (if you didn't do it in this order that is probably your problem).

I will reinstall my Norton Anti-Virus program.

I am using Webroot Spyware Detection software.  It seems to be doing a good job.

The Dell Model is Dimension 8200.  I am operating Windows XP Professional.  SP2 is installed.

The Visioneer OneTouch 9320 USB scanner is brand new, purchased from Dell when I recently bought another laptop.  The new Visioneer scanner is replacing a Visioneer 4400USB.  The only reason that I am replacing the Visioneer 4400USB is because I felt like it.  The older scanner was functioning fine.  I uninstalled the old Visioneer 4400USB software before installing the new scanner software.  I have checked with Visioneer and have made sure that the drivers that are installed are current.  I have checked with PaperPort and have upgraded to Release 10 making this software current.

I installed the Visioneer OneTouch 9320 USB paying close attention to the sequence of installing the software before connecting up the scanner.
