Shut Down Problem
Recently I have not been able to shut down normally. Even though "Shut Down" is selected, the system starts the shutdown but then reboots. I have to manually press the "power" button before the reboot starts. I've tried correcting by using the repair function on the XT OS disk, run degrag, Norton Anti-Virus and system check. So far nothing has corrected the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Dell Dimension 4500, Pentium 4 Processor at 2.4GHz
Thanks,
Peter

If you hit (simultaneously) "Ctrl + Alt + Delete" a few times, the TASK MANAGER will appear.
Under "Applications", it will show you the PROGRAM that will not shut off. There is most likely, a patch or upgrade to fix this either in Windows Updates or the manufacturer's updates.
Just a shot in the dark: Do you have "Easy CD Creator" (ROXIO)? That will do it for certain. If you go to Roxio & download the patches, it'll shut off normally again.
Norton 2003 is problematic as well. Again, between Windows Updates (you should get them ALL) & Symantec's updates, the problem will get fixed.
Good luck,
Mark

Yes, ECDC and Norton. Do give Avast Home antivirus a try. Works great with my triple boot PC. And it's free. The best part is that Avast will not slow down your hard drive.

Hi Francis,
Thanks for the anti-virus info. Do you like Avast? Does it use less resources than Norton?, PC-Cillin? Ever have a problem or have it miss a malicious script?
It sounds like a real "find". Please let me know at your convenience.

Avast Home uses about 19MB of RAM (more than Norton). However, Avast does not reduce the throughput speed of the hard drive like Norton. My HD speed drops by about 20% when Norton Auto Protect is active. But I see no measurable drop in speed with Avast running in the background. Novice users will appreciate the simplicity of Norton.
Avast's default setting should work well for most people. The Home version lacks scriptblocking capability. Avast Pro adds scriptblocking. On the plus side, Avast has a very efficient method of updating the virus database. It is lighning fast when compared to Norton.
I use Avast Home along with Zone Alarm Pro 4.0.
