This is primarily a non Dell employee "users helping users" forum.  Not a line to Dell.

1. You can uninstall the Sigmatel Driver, reboot, let VISTA install the sound driver and then download and install SP1, or;

2. You can uninstall the Sigmatel Driver, reboot, download SP1 and install, then I believe you can uninstall the VISTA driver, download the Sigmatel Driver and reinstall that, or;

3. You can try downloading the full SP1 434mb file, install it and if your sound drivers fail just reinstall at that time, or;

4. You can wait patiently as Microsoft is aware, Dell is aware and it appears they are working on a solution. Some people are not getting SP1 until Mid-April, so you would not be the only one waiting. Then when it's fixed, you will receive the SP1 via Windows Update.

As far as the warranty expiration....you can

1. Figure it out by looking back to when your computer was shipped. It's 1 year from the invoice date when your warranty expires, unless you extended it. Or;

2. You can go to support.dell.com and select warranty information. When it asks for your service tag, if you don't know it just click find it for me. Install the dell program that finds your service tag and then click warranty. It will give you details about what your warranty type coverage is and the number of days until it expires.

As far as berating Fireberd, you should issue an apology. He is a fantastic font of information and I find it highly offensive when someone relatively new to these boards makes sarcastic comments to people who donate their own time to help the best they can. From my viewpoint he was only pointing out that the statement to Dell about not having emails and such would fall upon deaf ears as this is a user forum.

There is a wealth of information on this forum, if you want to research it.  The fix for SP1 has been posted on the Software/Vista forum for those that needed it (and probably has been posted on this section too).

As far as the other, I stand by my statement.  A few post on the users forum assuming it's a direct line to Dell and it isn't.

If your talking about a BIOS fix, the tech tried that last night. Everything failed.

Your post caught my eye. I purchased a new inspiron 1720 which I received last Wednesday, March 19th. On the 20th I started calling tech support because I have had no sound EVER. I have had them and I reinstall the drivers, reinstall the operating system (vista) and multiple other things on a daily basis now since that date. They even sent a tech to my home carrying a new motherboard. When he did the diagnostics, which has also been done on a daily basis, he said it was not a hardware problem, called tech support and reinstalled the operating system once again. At this point I had spent over 5 hours on the phone with tech support. Last night after the in home tech reinstalled the operating system again, I spent the next 3 hours working with tech support via the phone again for almost 3 hours. I was told he was sorry not to have fixed it, but I would receive a call from tech today.... so they can reinstall the operating system. I explained that it had been done THREE times now.. I don't know if they don't understand or just are hard of hearing. I wrote Dell a letter last night telling them Im not spending any more time trying to fix this laptop, that was supposed to be ready out of the box. Now with almost 12 hours of my time invested, and no resolution, I just want a NEW one and fast. This thing is a lemon. Unfortunately, I also need it quickly. I have lined up several classes and I need a WORKING laptop to get these done. That is why I purchased it the beginning of March; so it would be up and running and user friendly in April. Im so disappointed and aggravated with Dell right now. Im really regretting my purchase.

I got my problem resolved. I finally talked to someone who took a look at everything that was done, and they are doing a system exchange.

OK here is what I found,after doing some detective work. It turns out that Dell DOES have a driver update, but they haven't yet catalogged it correctly.

I was in a similar situation with a Dimension e521. I couldn't get the Vista SP1 update through Windows update because of the Sigmatel driver. I looked at all of the Sigmatel drivers on Dell's website, and I found this file:

File R173209

 SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio, v.6.10.0.5515, A05
Sigmatel STAC92XX C-Major HD Audio Driver
R173209.exe

02/21/2008

Systems
OptiPlex 740

Operating Systems

Microsoft Windows Vista 32-bit
Microsoft Windows Vista 64-bit

Now, you might be saying "but I don't have an Optiplex 740!" Well, neither do I, but when I looked at the last good driver I had, I noticed that it listed MY Dimension e521, the Optiplex 740, your XPS 410 and several others.

This made me think....

If the last Sigmatel driver worked for my PC AND the Optiplex 740, then why wouldn't this new driver work?

So I took a chance and downloaded and installed this driver. When it ran, the dialog box on the screen had a list of all of these PCs:

Dimension C521
Dimension E521
XPS/Dimension 410/9200
XPS/Dimension 420
XPS/Dimension 210/9200C
Dimension E520
Dell Precision WorkStation 390
Dell Precision WorkStation 490
Dell Precision WorkStation 690
OptiPlex 740
XPS/Dimension XPS 710
XPS/Dimension XPS 710 H2C

At this point I knew this driver would work, and it did.

Shortly after install and rebooting, Windows Update showed Vista SP1 as an option to download and install!

So there you have it. The file does exist on Dell's site, but some idiot only has it listed as compatible for the Optiplex 740, even though the software itself mentions all those other compatible PC models when it is run!

If Dell would just list file R173209 on all of the other PC models' download lists (and not just the Optiplex 740) then we wouldn't have these problems of waiting to install Vista's SP1 because we can't find a decent driver.

By the way, SP1 has made my e521 much faster and more responsive.

I think Dell owes me a free PC for figuring out their messed up update file compatibility list!

FIX IT NOW DELL! Put file R173209 on the download pages of all of those PCs listed above.

You can find this file by searching for R173209

I do appologize. It's just that i came here after spending lots of time trying to figure out why i couldn't get sp1, realized the driver issue, and then couldn't get through to dell at all. So i do appologize for taking my anger/frustration out on you (i realize you're trying to help), but it would be nice if dell would publish some information instead of leaving its customers in the dark

a minor point but all of the sigmatel drivers are compatible with SP1.  Vista SP1 reinstalls all drivers and there is a small chance that the older driver versions (as listed by microsoft) will fail to reinstall.  The solution in this case is just to reinstall the same sigmatel driver that you had before.  Chances are though that you will never have the issue.

Nemesis:

That is true, but most folks don't download the entire Vista SP1 patch themselves separately. I did get Vista SP1 to install on a system with the offending driver, and it didn't cause any major problems when I did apply the big SP1 patch I downloaded myself.

However, Microsoft says that it COULD cause a problem in some instances, and that is why they don't offer the upgrade on its Windows Update section (where most users get there updates and patches).

Also, Microsoft tells people that the best way to get Vista SP1 is to wait until it is offered by Windows Update; but Windows Update won't show SP1 as an option until the Sigmatel driver is replaced. Therefore, the average user won't ever get the SP1 update, because Dell's website has  incorrectly listed the driver in their download section of their website.

I help out a lot of individuals and small businesses with tech support; so I have seen a lot of people with this problem. That is why I took the time to investigate and check out all of the sigmatel drivers until I found out that a new one really does exist. I wanted to help out the average user who is simply following the instructions that Microsoft gave them (wait for SP1 to appear in Windows Update).

I think it is absoutely ridiculous that Dell has the driver that would solve the problem, but only has it listed under the Optiplex 740, even though the driver itself lists many other PC models when it starts the installation process. I'm sure there are scores of people who are checking the Dell download website daily , only to find that there is no new audio driver listed for their model of PC.

From Microsoft's website:

"To help ensure a positive update experience, Windows Update will temporarily not offer Windows Vista SP1 to systems that have the following device drivers. In some cases, these device drivers are problematic on Windows Vista-based computers when you update to Windows Vista SP1. By installing updated device drivers, you will resolve the issue and enable Windows Update to offer Windows Vista SP1. "

Audio drivers

SigmaTel

• For x86-based computers: Stwrt.sys - version 6.10.5511.0 or earlier • For x64-based computers: Stwrt64.sys - version 6.10.5511.0 or earlier

SigmaTel

• For x86-based computers: Sthda.sys - version 5.10.5762.0 or earlier • For x64-based computers: Sthda64.sys - version 5.10.5762.0 or earlier

The only resolution Microsoft lists on their website is to download updated drivers from either Windows Update (none there) or from the manufacturer (Dell - where they are hidden).

 I just wanted to let people know how they could get Vista SP1 to show up as an option under Windows Update, 'cause it will never show up until the driver is updated.

Sjoblom, i do agree with you -- it was absolutely good to point out and I'll be updating my vista laptop with the new sigmatel drivers even though it already has SP1 at this point.

dell also just released new vista drivers for my intel GMA 950 integrated video chip (still less recent than intel's latest, but it covers a lot of lost ground).  Surprisingly it raised my sad windows experiance score from a 2.0 to a 2.2.  My old video drivers were not within the range listed by microsoft (older than the range listed), but it's nice to know that dell now has newer ones as well.

You're also right that the old drivers will prevent the service pack from being easily offered to most.  That said, for all service packs, I tend to believe that the stand alone installer is safer than windows update (no real basis for this though).  I wouldn't install an SP through windows update unless I was on dialup or was being charged for the bandwidth.
