OK here is what I found, after doing some detective work. It turns out that Dell DOES have a driver update, but they haven't yet catalogged it correctly.
I was in a similar situation with a Dimension e521. I couldn't get the Vista SP1 update through Windows update because of the Sigmatel driver. I looked at all of the Sigmatel drivers on Dell's website, and I found this file:
File R173209
SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio, v.6.10.0.5515, A05 Sigmatel STAC92XX C-Major HD Audio Driver R173209.exe
02/21/2008
You can find this file by searching for R173209
Many thanks for this, sjoblom ... my E521 is now happily updated to Vista SP1! :smileyvery-happy:
thank you for posting this information, just want to add a remark:
I have a Dimension E520 and downloaded the file "R173209.exe". When I checked the compatible systems in the popup window the Dimension "E520" did not show up. Anyway, I installed the driver successfully but SP1 did not appear in WU. Now I have downloaded the Vista SP1 standalone version but I'm still afraid of executing...
Anyone here in the forum who succesfully installed Vista SP1 on a Dimension E520 machine?
the E520 is basically the same as the E521 so you should not have a problem downloading the driver.
For me i have the E521 and it took about 2 hours for WU to pop up and tell me sp1 was available. Also you must make sure you downloaded all prior updates or even if you install this driver you will not see sp1.
Also if any of your updates failed to install (look in your WU history), sp1 will not show either and you will have to figure out which ones stalled and get them updated.
you know i find moving around a bit faster but starting up it is as slow as it was before but shutting down has improved. Other than that I really do not see a major difference
I also looked at the contents of the STWRT.INI file from the R157052.exe & R153751.exe packages. The following hardware IDs were on there:
HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_76A0&SUBSYS_10280214
HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_76A0&SUBSYS_1028021D
The Sigmatel HD audio drivers v6.10.5515 from the R173209.exe package will NOT work with hardware IDs that begin with "FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_76A0". So if you have a Dell machine that use sigmatel hd audio with hardware ID of "FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_76A0&SUBSYS_10280214" or "FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_76A0&SUBSYS_1028021D" and using non-Vista SP1 compliant drivers, I feel sorry for you. You will have to un-install the sigmatel hd audio drivers, reboot and make Vista use the generic HD audio driver file (hdaudio.sys), then use Windows Update to get Vista SP1 and after you install SP1, re-install the sigmatel hd audio drivers.
How to get the hardware ID number of your Sigmatel HD Audio device? Open Device Manager by typing devmgmt.msc in the Run dialog box, expand the Sound, Video and Game Controllers section, double-click on Sigmatel High Definition Audio Codec to view its properties, click on the Details tab, and change the Property from "Device Description" to "Hardware IDs"
Integrated Device Technology [IDT] has posted a support KB article about the issues with the Sigmatel/IDT Audio drivers and the Vista Service Pack 1 update right here:
Hi, Many thanks for your information re Sigma Tel Driver R173209. I installed this driver on my Dimension E521 with Windows Vista Home Premium and had no problems. Sound works just fine. I was then able to install SP1 through Windows Update. The installation went smoothly with no problems, and sound still works just fine.
I had tried installing the IDT High Definition Audio Codec offered by Microsoft, but that did not work - no sound. I had to do a system restore to recover sound.
I contacted Dell who told me to uninstall the Sigma Tel software, then install SP1, then reinstall the Sigma Tel software. I was hesitant to try this, so I did not follow Dell's instructions.
I am pleased I was able to update the driver without uninstalling and successfully download and install SP1.
Hi, I have a Dimension E310. I have tried to install the driver but it says that its not the right one. Please tell me which driver I need to fix that problem.

Thank you "robin9" for that information!
I just executed the standalone version of the SP1. The installation took 50 min. and 2 reboots, but everything without a problem (and I have sound)!
Now Vista really is a lot faster than before :smileyhappy:

If you take a look at the STWRT.INI file from the R173209.exe package, it lists these hardware IDs for the Sigmatel HD Audio:
