When I go to Dell's download area for the Vostro and open the audio section, there are two listed drivers:

1) Creative Labs - Application
Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer

2) Realtek - Driver
ALC888 HD Audio

I had to take the 2nd one (the Realtek) for my onboard sound to make it work in Windows XP. Did you use that driver, too?

I too have the same problem. I bought 2 Vostro 200 with Win XP and the audio driver fails.

I have tried everything myself and another technician can think of - still no joy.

The Dell supplied driver on the website fails. I have worked out that it is because the actual driver can not be added to the device. When you go into device manager you have the option to update the driver, but you cannot install 1 of your choice (forcing it to use the dell supplied driver) - it refuses to go any further in the process.

Can anyone at Dell help? It is not just 1 or 2 people that are affected by this.

nagfy:

Remove the audio controller from Device Manager and restart the computer. Let Windows detect the hardware and install the software.

If that fails, reinstall the Chipset and then Realtek driver again.

Let us know the results.

Thanks for the reply.

I tried, but the device refuses to uninstall. It says that windows will not function properly so cannot uninstall. I turned the audio off in the bios and started in safe mode - still cannot remove or update driver.

Also the chipset install runs suspiciously fast.

Did the audio work when you first received both systems?

I don't know. We bought these with Vista business licenese so we could use XP.

The first thing I did was install XP.

Did you get the Vostro 200 Mini or Slim? If you received the Slim, then you would have integrated audio and would not have to be concerned with downloading the Creative drivers, only the Realtek. However the Mini can be configured with several other sound options and drivers would depend on your purchase configuration.

That said, when performing a fresh installation, make sure you install drivers in the following order:

Dell Driver Installation Order

I'm not seeing a lot of other customers with this issue, and at least none that haven't been resolved with the correct driver installation.

Could you have your IT person try the installation again?
