Stealth Boot C Virus

How do I delete this virus? I've reinstalled Windows 98, reformatted, and still have crashes and the inablitlity to start Windows. Keep getting the same error id, which a Dell tech person said was the above virus.

Hi,

This is a boot sector virus, so the repair method may be more intensive than what you have done. If you made an antivirus rescue set of disks and have kept it current, you can try rebooting with it and see if it can clean your boot sector on your hard drive.

If you don't have a set already, then don't make one on this system as it would be corrupt from the beginning.

Instead, you would want to go much farther with your cleaning, and I would recommend debugging, then fdisking, then reformatting, then reinstalling Windows. You need to be certain that the master boot record is clean. This means that you need to use an emergency boot disk that has not previously been used on your infected computer to boot the system to do your work.

Edit: I found this article from the McAfee AV Library which describes the virus. It will at least let you know what is currently happening with your system.

KayH-
I think I've been able to clean up my system using the clean1 utility on the the Dell Resources disk. Wish me luck on my system remaining okay.
Thanks,
Steve
