Stuck at Windows 2000 Splash Screen
Stats: Dimension XPS T450; PIII; 128MB RAM; Windows 2000 Professional+SP3; IE6.0-SP1; All hotfixes with the exception of the cumulative update for IE6.0-SP1(KB832894); BIOS=A11.
ISSUE: Computer stops at the Windows 2000 Splash Screen. The indicator bar reaches about 70% and stops. I receive no response from the keyboard. Unplugging the PC is the only way to reboot it.
Problem started after I completed a full install of Windows 2000 Pro, with misc. basic applications (Word, Excel, Acrobat Reader, Juno email). When I perform a full shutdown and power off the computer and then try to power it back on again. I am able to boot into safe mode, but I don't see anything suspicious.
I tried to reinstall the OS again, using a different monitor (NEC) and it seemed fine. Then I changed monitors back to the (DELL) and it was fine for (1) one cold boot only. Then the problem came back.
My current troubleshooting step is to download an updated video driver from the ATI manufacturer: Current stats on the video driver are as follows [ATI Technologies, Inc. 3D RAGE PRO AGP 2X - 11/18/1999 - ver:5.0.2184.1] New driver stats are [ATI Technologies, Inc. 3D RAGE PRO AGP 2X - 4/2/2002 - ver:5.0.2195.5013]. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I've re-installed the OS twice now with the same results. The previous OS was NT4 Workstation.

Did yours have problems with BOTH drivers?

Well, I'm sorry to say that I did have problems with both drivers. The original one that comes with Windows 2000 and the one from the manufacturer. The Manufactuer's driver did say that DirectX 8.1 had to be installed for this driver, but all I had was DirectX 8.0. I suppose I could grab the latest version (9.0b) and then re-install the driver. I know it is the driver causing this issue though because, when I deleted the ATI driver in Safe-Mode, I rebooted with no problems.
I may try the DirectX upgrade and the re-install of the ATI driver, but I'm afraid due to time constraints, I'm going to re-install Windows NT4. This was working fine prior to my rebuild to 2000 Professional. Oh well. This PC must just be too old for 2000, I guess. It is starting to blue screen on me too. Thanks so much for your post though.

Well, this is a long shot and I'm not a techie....but I had an identical problem some time ago. I finally tracted it down to the older IOMEGA 100MB external Zip drive. It seemed that for some reason, my boot sequence was wrong and would get stuck at about 70%. The only way it would complete the boot is if I had a zip drive in it as it went through its sequence. Then, no prob. The IOMEGA folks sent me an email on how to reconfigure the order of my drives. I haven't done it yet, but it appears they weren't surprised at my problem. For the time being, as long as I keep a disk in the drive there's no prob.
So, could it be a boot sequence for you? Zip drive?
Good luck!
