Hi Fabio,

The issue can occur due to hardware failure as well. Please run the hardware diagnostics to confirm the hardware functionality. Here are the steps:

  • Restart the system and immediately start tapping the 'F12' key to enter the 'Boot Menu'.
  • Use the 'Down Arrow' key to highlight the 'Diagnostics' option. Press the 'Enter' key.
  • The diagnostics will begin. Please note the exact error message/code, if any appears on the screen.

Please share the results.

Hi Saharsh

I ran the Diagnostic as you suggested, but there was no error nor warning, and the end message was: "pre-boot system assessment complete. no diagnostic utility partition identified."

I also ran the on-line diagnostic, by Dell site, with "full option",  and also in this case there was no error.

Can I check something else?

Hi Fabio,

You may try re-installing ATA channels 0 and 1. Here are the steps:

  • Click on 'Start' and right click on 'Computer'.
  • Click on 'Manage'.
  • Click on 'Device Manager'.
  • Expand IDE ATA\ATAPI Controllers and and delete ATA channel0 (2x) and ATA channel1 (2x).
  • Reboot and check event logs for errors.

If this doesn't work, then it appears to be an issue with the SATA connectors on the motherboard. You may consider replacing it.

Please reply with the findings.

Hi Saharsh

I did what you wrote, but there are still hangs and errors in event logs...

so, my only choice is to change the motherboard, isn't it? Or can I do something else, before?

Hi Fabio,

Thank you for sharing the results. It indicates a hardware failure.

However, I will recommend you to update the BIOS once and observe system performance before you replace the motherboard. Here are the steps:

  • Click on the below link: http://dell.to/QjjZDA
  • Enter the Service Tag of your system and select the operating system.
  • Go to 'BIOS' and click on the BIOS available.
  • Click on “Download File”.
  • Select 'For Single File Download via Browser'.
  • Click on 'Download Now'.
  • Save the BIOS on your desktop.
  • Once the BIOS is downloaded on the desktop, right click on it and select 'Run as administrator'.
  • Follow the prompts on screen and restart your computer.

Also, please check the 'Reliability Monitor' to check if it is pointing out towards any other point of failure. Here are the steps:

  • Click on 'Start' and then click on 'Control Panel' to open it.
  • Click on the Action Center icon.
  • Click on the 'Maintenance' drop down arrow to expand it, then click on the 'View reliability history' link under the 'Check for solutions to problem reports' section. (see screenshot below)

In the Reliability Monitor, you can:

  • Next to View by, click on Days, Weeks, Month, or Year to view the stability index over a specific period of time that you want.
  • In the upper pane, click on any event on the graph to view its reliability details in the lower pane.
  • Under the lower Reliability details pane, you can click on an available link under the Actions column. For example, View technical details to see more details about the reported problem.
  • At the bottom, click on the View all problem reports link to view only the problems that have occurred on your computer. This view does not include the other computer events that show up in Reliability Monitor, such as events about software installation.

Please share the results.

Hi Fabio,

Thank you for sharing the information. I have done some more research on this issue.

The hard drive on this system gets connected to the green port on the cage assembly (shown in image below). Please remove and reseat the hard drive firmly on the cage and then connect the cage assembly to the motherboard firmly.

If the issue still persist, please consider replacing the cage assembly first and then the motherboard.

Please reply if you have any further questions.
