Studio XPS 8100 Memory problems

started out with 16gb of Memory (Factory) only have 4Gb left of the factory memory that works. So anyway I bought 16gb of replacement memory and after installation it will not boot up. I get 4 beeps (which indicates memory problems) so what I did was narrow it down putting in 1 stick at a time trying to see if I had purchased bad memory and it was still a no go. I cleared CMOS settings, updated the BIOS and still it won't work. The only way I can get the machine to boot up is to use that old 4gb module I have left out of the factory memory, I've also took some out of my other machine which I know works and it won't boot with that either. Suggestions welcome. Oh, the replacement memory was 16gb of Kingston Hyper X blue.

Hi Ret0102,

The 4 beeps means memory failure and appreciate that you’ve tried all possible steps to fix the issue.
As the old memory is working fine when replaced, the new memory might not be compatible with your system’s configuration.
The Studio XPS™ 8100 system uses 1066 MHz DDR3 and 1333 MHz DDR3 unbuffered SDRAM and it is recommended that the
memory you purchase memory from Dell.

Please let us know the configuration of the memory that you’ve purchased and from where did you purchase the memory. Also click on the
below link which has the parts for your computer.

For anyone who would like to know how I solved the problem, it was a simple bad set (entire 16gb) of bad memory. After returning it and getting a new kit it worked out fine.

Hi reeard,

I think you've confirmed that the Kingston RAM is not compatible with your system. We recommend Crucial.

Good luck!

Good Morning, I have a similar problem, on my Dell Studio xps 8100 I tried updating my memory. My machine came with 4 memory sticks 1 gig each, I purchase 2 sticks of 4 gig memory ( Kingston KVR13N9S8/4 ) so I would increase my memory in my machine but when installed it would not start. I removed all the old memory before I installed the new ones. when it did not boot I removed the mew memory and installed 2 sticks back into the machine to get it to work. What can I do to correct the problem??

Thank you for your reply, I will source it and see if it works. I will let you know. One question, the only reason I purchase the Kingston brand is because my machine came with it from Dell?

The part number you referenced is for Kingston ValueRAM, which is a lower quality product. I'm pretty sure that's not what Dell supplies.
