System Temperatures HOW?

How can I Check system temperatures: CPUs memory, drives. . .. is there a program from Dell or Intel???
Alfredo Comparetti at Speedfan is working on a beta of the program Speedfan for me. Not done yet

Use i8kfanGUI in observer mode. It can be set up to monitor a big array of temps. Works great on the M70.

How can I Check system (Precision 490) temperatures: CPUs memory, drives. . ..
Do you know if  i8kfanGUI will work on my system??????????

On my Precision 390 (E6300 CPU), the current version of Everest show each cpu-core temperature.

The Intel Thermal Analysis Tool also works.

Thanks for the suggestions  8kfanGUI, Everest and speedfan don’t do it yet.

The dell system utility ( in a boot  partition ) gets temps and controls the fans so it can be do?

At least in dos

Are you sure that Everest don't work for you? You must try the last version (3.01)

Which CPU(s) has your PWS 490? Xeon 50xx series? or Xeon 51xx series? I think that the 51xx has a digital thermal sensor in the CPU, so Everest can read it (like the Core 2 Duo CPUs).

Thats what I have found out.  One of the big problems with Dell.  Im trying to find out who makes the board for Dell may be they will have the answer?   Thanks for trying.

OK. You have the Xeon from the 5000 series.

As far as I know, these processors dont have the digital thermal sensors, so Everest can't obtain the information.

An alternative is to obtain the information via the motherboard. Unfortunately, the protocol to do that is propietary from Dell.

@klinetime: The sensors that I mentioned are the "Digital Thermal Sensors" (DTS), which are on the core of the CPU and you can interrogate directly via CPU registers.

The Core 2 Duo and the new Xeon (5100 series) implement the DTS.

Another way to obtain the CPU temperature is to query a subsystem on your motherboard about the information on the CPU thermal diode. You can't obtain this information directly from the CPU. You must query this subsystem.

The protocol to do that is propietary from Dell. Your Precision modulate the fans according to this information.

On my Precision, I can obtain the temperatures because Everest read the DTS registers. No need to mess with the thermal diode and the Dell propietary protocol!

FYI
Found this on the Intel site

The Intel Xeon processor has unique system management capabilities. One of these is the ability to monitor the processor's core temperature relative to a known maximum setting. The processor's Thermal Sensor outputs the current processor temperature and can be addressed via the System Management Bus (SMBus).  So it looks like the 5050 chip has the sensors.
