The highest rated CPU that Dell sold with the T3610 was the E5-2650 v2 (2.6 GHz, L3 20 MB, 8-core, Turbo 3.4 GHz) so it cannot be guaranteed that CPUs of a higher spec will work.
You were probably told that the CPU you were given will work because T3610 has an Intel C602 chipset which supports the following CPUs:
I don't know if there are any limitations in the BIOS that will prevent the CPU that you have from working but the BIOS update you mention did not include any enhancements for CPU support.
