T7400 memory riser fan noisier since adding RAM
Original config:
Dell Precision Workstation T7400 (With Memory Riser
Quad Core Intel® Xeon® Processor X5492 (3.4GHz,2X6M L2,1600)
16GB, DDR2 SDRAM FBD Memory, 800MHz, ECC (4 DIMMS)
3x300GB SAS 15K RPM Hard Drives
It was never the quietest machine..
I've recently added 4 more 4GB DDR2 SDRAM FBD's, which brings the total to 32GB, and a 600GB 15k drive.
The fan in the Memory riser is definitely a little louder.
When the OS boots, it gets loud, and then settles down to something a little louder than when it was running 16GB.
Ran all the memory diagnostics and they passed.
Is this normal?

Hi cushlomockree2,
Precision T7400 BIOS automatically selects an alternate fan curve when a memory riser is detected in the system. This ensures the removal of heat produced by the Fully Buffered Dual Inline Memory Modules (FBDIMMs) installed. When 8 or fewer FBDIMMS are installed, this may result in excessive fan noise.
Please consider updating the BIOS to the latest version. You can use the below mentioned link to download the latest BIOS. BIOS updates can fix this issue. Please follow the instructions carefully while updating the BIOS. Also consider cleaning the fan using a can of compressed air.

I hope this information helps. Please do write back in case you need any further assistance.

Thanks. I did try the bios update (AO04 to AO11) and the noise is about the same.
In your reply, you mentioned "when 8 or fewer FBDIMMS are installed, this may result in excessive fan noise."
In my case, noise increased when I went from 4 to 8. I'll try the compressed air.

Cleaning everything with compressed air did the trick.
Thanks!
