Temp files-What to do??

When I go to C:drive then Windows/Temp files I see so much junk in there. I can recognize the tmp. files and manually delete them along with graphics, old documents, etc. but there are folders ( ISTMP1.DIR ) and more of these in numbered sequence. Can everything in the temp file under windows be deleted? When I go to disk cleanup it indicates nothing in temp files needs to be removed but the file is huge.

I delete everything in C:\Windows\Temp and experienced no problems. This included all of the numbered ISTMP_.DIR folders. As I understand it, this Temp directory is a trash bin. Nothing in there that cannot be deleted. And so far that has proven to be the case.

I stopped using Disk Cleanup because it is not very agressive in cleaning the Temp directory. It will only remove the .tmp files after seven days and none of the other files or folders. I always seems to have one pesky folder that re-appears from time to time in the Temp folder, so I just leave it. If I delete it, it just comes back later with a new date. It's ...\msoclip1\01. I manually cleanup the Temp directory every few days. Hope this helps.

Thank you for the help. "Not aggressive enough" is how disk cleanup seems to be taking care of this. I'll clean it out feeling more confident that you deleted the same type of files.
