Thinking about upgrading my 8800 GTX to a GTX 260 or 280

I haven't made up my mind yet as to which direction I am going to go.  Either the GTX 260 or the 280 as either one should be better than my current duel 8800 GTX.  The only advantage the 260's has is that I wouldn't need to find a 6-pin to 8-pin pci-e power connector for my 1000 watt PS.

The 8800's have served me well except the time one of them died.

So either duel GTX 260's and not have to worry about my PS or a single GTX 280 with some kind of  6-pin to 8-pin power connector.

Any thoughts ?

I am using the XFX XXX Edition GTX 260's and I'm very happy with my purchase. You can get them on NewEgg for $270 after a $30 mail-in-rebate.

Im looking at the GTX 280 with an adapter on my 750w system myself. If you want duals I would go with the 260's.

Im not worried about the adapter as the two grounds will not pull any more from the supply

I bought BFG's 280 OC from newegg, had the rebate (which is good till friday) and now if you buy the 280's you get Farcry 2 bundled with it.Oh ,and it runs fantastic !

If you can afford "Porsche 911 Carrera"... would you still consider "Porsche Boxster" !?

Go for the GTX280...  add another piece for SLI whenever you want down the road...JMHO

I have a single MSI 260 in my 730 and I am very happy with it. It plays Crysis: WH with everything at Enthusiast level, 2x AA and 1440x900 resolution at very respectable frame rate. It cost me $220 after a rebate.

I planned of buying another one in 6 months or so when the price comes down.

Unless you are running a 30" monitor at super high resolutions 280 sli would be extreme overkill.....not to mention big bucks.

There's a couple of options the new 216 core 260 cards in an O/C version for example the BFG Maxcore260 they have a couple of overclocked versions, EVGA similarly have a few, and Zotac have their 216core 260 AMP2 most of these O/C versions have the 2x6pin plugs and run equally to a stock 280 card. They are also much cheaper if you go sli get 2 of these! Nvidia has 2 new ones coming the new 280 card which has the newer shrunken circuitry and is faster than the old 280 also there is a duel 280 coming!

I swaped my maxcore for a Zotac 260 AMP2 which I got a real good deal on it's a great card as was the maxcore.

The XFX XXX GTX 260 still has a faster memory and core clock than the EVGA core 216 cards. When the prices drop on the 280's, I'll sell my 260's and upgrade. Right now though, the prices aren't on par when it comes to the performance increase over the 260 which isn't by much.
