USB Devices in Device Manager

I have a Dell Dimension 5150 and a Latitude D610.

When I insert my flash drive or Olympus Camera into a vacant USB port the laptop, they both appear in Device Manager as:

Universal Serial Bus controllers

     USB Mass Storage Device

     USB Mass Storage Device

Neither of them require installing drivers to work as they use the supplied driver in system32\drivers.

When I do the same on the Dimension, they appear under 'Other Devices' with yellow question marks, but do seem to be recognised for what they are (eg: USB2.0 Drive).  However, I am asked to install drivers for them.  Needless to say, they do not work.

This desktop seems to have all the same drivers as the laptop does and also shows the same USB information in the Device Manager.

ie: Intel(R) 82801FB/FBM USB2 Enhanced Universal Host Controller - 2658

etc.

Can anybody shed any light why the devices are not been added under Universal Serial Bus controllers in Device Manager for the desktop.  I am unable to use either of them.

thanks

You are right in that no drivers should be required for USB storage devices.  Do other USB devices work properly on the Dimension?  Do other USB ports work?

I would try reinstalling the chipset drivers (includes the USB drivers).  If that doesn't work, I would delete (uninstall) all of the USB controller and let Windows redetect them.

To answer your question Peter, other devices do not work either, including an iPod and a printer which does come with drivers.  However, 2 ports do work, the ones that the mouse and the keywoard plug into.  If I try and plug them into any of the other ports, they don't work either.  There is a total of 6 USB ports in all.

I would try the flash drive in one of the ports that work (e.g. the mouse port).

If deleting the USB controllers that aren't working in Device Manager doesn't help, I would try powering down, pulling the power cord and pressing the power button for 10 seconds.  That has brought my USB ports back to life (but all of them dead).

Hello,

Have you reinstalled windows on this system? Or it is how it came from Dell?.

It belongs to a friend who is computer illiterate and says the ports have never worked since buying the PC directly from Dell.  They've had an independent consultant in to look at it who may well have re-installed Windows though. He spent a couple of hours looking at it but they don't know exactly what he did to try and rectify it.  The bottom line was he got paid about £300 for leaving it in the same state it was in before he started.

Hello again,

Just on an off chance...

Install the Chipset drivers. You can find them and all other downloads for your system here.
