USB Hub - PC won't shut down or boot up with Hub

I have an XPS400 running Windows 98. I am trying to connect the Belkin 4 port Pocket Hub. If I plug the Hub into the PC and then try to boot up the machine, the PC hangs and never boots up. If I unplug the Hub, the PC will kick in and continue to boot up. After it is up, I can plug in the Hub and everything works fine. If the Hub is plugged in and I try to shut down, the PC will again hang during shut down. Again if I unplug the Hub, shutdown continues.

I have updated all the USB drivers from 4/10/1998 version to the 2223 version. This did not seem to help. Could my problem just be Windows 98? I have read some other posts to delltalk and it seems everyone that has been able to get a hub to work is running XP or 2000.

Thanks in advance for any input you may have.

I have a Belkin POWERED 4 port USB hub connected to my Dell Dimension
XPS R400 running Win98 also and it works fine...if you have the POWERED version and it
is plugged into rear of you CPU maybe you should check to be sure the
little slide switch on left end of hub should be set on SELF..and then plugged
into the USB connector on back of your computer..check and try that..
Good luck..have a great week.

Thanks for the reply. I have checked the switch. Tried it without the plug with the switch set to Bus, with the plug with the switch set to Self. This is the second hub I have tried. The first was a cheaper belkin 4 port hub. Looks like the problem is somewhere in my computer.

Thanks again for your help. If you have any other ideas, let me know.
