Unable to eject external drive
It's a Dimension 8200 running XP Home Edition. I use 2 external hard drives connected through a usb hub and 1 external drive connected directly to a firewire port on the pc. Sometimes these drives are connected simultaneously and sometimes individually and they have always worked very well. Suddenly, out of the cleat blue sky I am not able to eject any of them. When clicking on the "safely remove hardware" icon in the taskbar notification area and then click on the device that I want to eject, a message comes up stating "The device generic volume cannot be stopped right now. Try the device again later." This occurs on all of the external drives (both usb and firewire) which eliminates a problem with any of the drives or usb hub. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

1. Go to into My Computer
2. Right click on the icon of an external hard drive
3. Go to properties
4. Go to the hardware tab
5. Click on the drive you want to change in the little window that is under hardware and click properties
6. Go to policies and change it from performance to quick removal.
7. Repeat this for each external hard drive that you want to be able quickly remove and be able to stop with the "Safley Remove Hardware"

I'm not quit sure, I just discovered that other method by fooling around with my external drive the other day, but it doesn't go anyware so I never stop the drive with the safely remove hardware icon. I just shut it off with its power button if I don't want the computer to use it anymore.
