Unable to select hardware profile in Windows XP with Dell Enhanced Performance USB keyboard

(I also posted this in the keyboard/mouse forum. Please let me know if we're not supposed to cross post.)

I have created two hardware profiles on my Dimension 8100 running Windows XP pro. My problem is that windows does not respond to keyboard input whe it asks for which profile to use. (So I can only boot into the defaut one.)

I suspect my USB keyboard in combination with the BIOS to be the problem. I allready have the latest XP2 bios.

If I use a PS/2 keyboard everything works fine.

If I go into the bios and enable USB emulation (under integrated devices), it also works.

I have two questions:

What are the implications of enabling USB emulation with respect to overall system performance etc?

Is there another solution to my problem. Maybe a bios update from DELL?

Frosdesiv,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
There no solution other then what you have already tried.
1.Use a PS2 keyboard
2.Enable USB emulation in the bios.

Don't worry, enabling USB emulation does not affect system performance.
As far as boot up time, it may add 1-3 seconds to the boot time.
Unfortunately there is no other way around this.

Windows does not have dos support for USB devices, and thus your USB devices are not going
to get detected until you boot to Windows.
This means that support for these devices in dos must come from the system bios.
This is why you must enable USB emulation in the bios.
If you do not do this, then your USB keyboard will not work while you are booting up or in dos.
