Upgrade Information Required for Dell Optiplex 320 and GX520

Welcome to the Community. You can upgrade the memory and the hard drive of your computer. Also you might want to add a video card. Motherboard and CPU upgrade will cost too much, you can purchase a new computer with the money you will be spending to upgrade such parts. My recommendation is to upgrade hard drive (more capacity) and memory (more speed). In Hard drives, you can go up to 500gb or higher as long as its a SATA Hard Drive. In memory, both system can go up to 4gb of ram. If you want to upgrade your motherboard, then you will have to use a retail version, and you won't be able to use dell OEM software on that board. Also, motherboards are made for that model, so you will have to buy a new case to put the motherboard in.

The number and capability of VIDEO cards and memory is EXTREMELY Limited in the 520.

Telling someone they can add a video card is irresponsible for a GX520.

I know the few video cards that can be added but they are VERY Low end and DO NOT FIT in any of the models EXCEPT the Tower.

I would NEVER EVER recommend a GX520 over a GX620.   See my Top 10 post for why.

Top Ten Reasons why the 520 is Not Suitable.

1.  The 620 has 4 memory slots.  The 520 has only 2.

2.  The Max Ram is 3.5 Gigs for the 620 the max ram is 4 Gigs for the 520.

3.   The 620 has a PCI-E X16 video slot.  The 520 has 2 ram slots and the X16 video slot removed.

4.   The 620 will take Faster Dual Core Pentium Processors.  The 520 will gripe about incompatable CPU and halt.

5    The 620 has the ability to use PCI X16 Asus Silent 6450 video cards.  The 520 cannot use any of these EVER.

6.   The 620 tower works pretty well with a Radeon HD6670 DDR5 video card.  The 520 cannot use any of these EVER.

7.   The 620 overall is a better buy because of the above whereas the 520 usually sells for the same price but shouldn't.

8.   The 620 Shares Ram with INTEL video but can use PCI-E X16 video.  The 520 tower can never use X16 video.

9    The 620 is a good buy but the 520 is not due to the above limitations.

10. The 620 will always be a better game system than the 520 due to all the above.

The 320 has other "Issues"

It only has 2 Ram Slots.

It uses Radeon X300 Series integrated Video.  (This means its no longer supported by ATI.) AKA X1100 chipset

It Cannot be upgraded to 4 Gigs ram.  (I added the latest Bios and it still does not accept more than 1  module that is 2 gigs.

It will do 2 Gig and 1 Gig or 2 Gig and .5 Gig

thanks, so if I can pick up a cheap gx620... Can I then go get an I3 and place it inside to make it faster. This is my first build so ya I'm a noob at this stuff..

No, not unless you're willing to modify the chassis.
