I talked with Dell support.  They said the motherboard will support a max. 3.2 GHz processor.  The Q6700 is 2.66GHz with 4 cores.  Dell support said that means it has 4 x 2.66 GHz which is > 3.2 GHz.   Not sure what that means.

Some people (Tom's hardware) have commented that they could use Q6700 but might need extra 5.25 PSU.

Any ideas or suggestions?

I have two Dell Optiplex 745 desktops.  They came with Pentium D Dual Core 2.8GHz.  Can this LGA 775 motherboard take Core 2 Quad Core Q6700 processor?  The Q6700 is 1066 MHz with 8M cache.

Latest Bios would be recommended BEFORE trying any new processor.

Dell OptiPlex System BIOS, 2.6.4 ------------- [check for the current latest version]

Release Date:  3/16/2010

No Wolfdale's or Yorkfield's.
Conroe/Allendale C2D or Kentsfield Quads only.

I have seen people stated that Q6600 is OK, which is Kentsfield. So take a look below

So, do you want an experiment with Q6700 or get Q6600, which most likely works?
