Upgrade XPS T450 with new Processor
Hello
I have an XPS T450 - one of the earliest 450MHz Pentium III Katmai systems. I am contemplating upgrading the processor.
I found a Slot 1 SECC2 Pentium III Running at 1GHz with a 100 MHz FSB. I ordered it. When I received it, to my surprise, the box states the processor has only been tested with 440GX+ server boards. I think the Dell I have is a 440BX -based board.
I'm wondering, before I go ahead and try this thing, if the upgrade will work on my system or if I'm at a risk of damaging the system board.

As long as you have the retail processor with a fan attached you will be fine, I installed the same P III 1 1/2 yrs ago in my XPST500. The only problem that you will face is the difference in the locking device on this unit vs the one that you have now. If you go to THIS site you will find detailed information on your installation.
Another thing that you must do is to update your BIOs so that the CMOS will recognize the larger processor.
