Upgrading DELL XPS 730x RAM from 6GB to 12GB

Ok bear with me here. I'm not very tech savvy and I've never upgraded my RAM before. I basically want to upgrade my DELL XPS 730x system from 6GB of RAM to 12GB. The product I purchased that is listed as compatible for my system is the Ballistix Elite 12GB Kit (4GBx3) DDR3 PC3-12800 • 8-8-8-24 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1600 • 1.5V • 512Meg x 64.

I've done a lot of research on how to tweak RAM timings and using XMP to get your RAM to run to it's full capacity as advertised. A lot of this stuff seems really confusing. Again, I know nothing about overclocking RAM and tweaking with timings. I just want to make sure I run the correct speeds from my new Ballistix Elite 12GB kit so I don't cause any damage to my computer.

From what I've read my system is indeed capable of running up to 12GB of RAM. My computer has the latest BIOS also. I will post my system specs below. I want to know if my computer will be able to handle speeds up to 1600Mhz. From what I know my system only supports up to 1066MHz which is what I'm using as of now. My processor is Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz (8 CPUs), ~2.7GHz. Also, the tRFC has a limit up to 100. I read that if I enable XMP through my BIOS I can get the speed to 1600MHz, even though my system only supports up to 1066MHz. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I use my DELL 730x for gaming. I figured by upgrading my RAM my system will be able to keep up with the latest games that are more demanding as far as what is required for system specs. I would appreciate any help on setting the right timings and volts or any other tweaks necessary to run my new RAM to it's fullest potential. Thank you.

From what I can see in the manual, you do not have the options to overclock the RAM, as such the 1600Mhz RAM will down clock to 1066Mhz.  I also believe that XMP is a relatively new thing that is not supported by your motherboard.  You are right in terms of how XMP works.  If your motherboard supported it, XMP would allow you to go from the memory chip's stock speed to the highest rated speed at  the push of a button in BIOS without tweaking a bunch of settings.

Okay so I was thinking about what my dad did on our older computers. So I found a technique that worked for me, I installed the 4gb module first and by itself and it booted perfectly. So after powering it off again and installing another one it worked also. Im running my xps 730x with 10gb of RAM. Hopes this helps (:
